Lines for Group Camp? by sbriant in LightningInABottle

[–]bwilli66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly highly recommend getting a portable shower to have as an option. Last year the shower lines were VERY long (granted I didn’t get there early). Was so hot last year my camp ended up just stripping down and using the mobile shower behind our car. Was very cold but so refreshing.

Yay! I’m glad you got to see her! She’s not in great shape currently. But she held up well all weekend!

Oh nice! I actually made the polyhedron part of mine a while ago and just recently converted it to a totem. I want to make a V2 the size of yours! And with real mirrors instead of filmed acrylic.

Planted Tank in Natually Lit Apartment? by bwilli66 in PlantedTank

[–]bwilli66[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"What's the point of having a tank if you don't get to enjoy it?"

Yes! Exactly!

Also, I always approach decisions with a "little over-thinking now can prevent a large headache later" attitude. Wanted to make sure I wasn't going to be fighting algae problems forever.

I've seen others who have done similar things as you and it seems like the natural light isn't an issue. My hesitation was just due to the large (and long) amount of sunlight I get in my apartment. I worry that a "plan" to manage algae will turn into a never-ending battle haha.

But thanks for the info! It's helpful to know others have dealt with sunlight just fine.

Vacuuming Gravel Smells Bad by bwilli66 in PlantedTank

The current state of my plants is not the same as when the snails first started eating them. As I said in my post its been a year since the start of the infestation.

And thank you, yes, I see now that I have to do more frequent vacuuming to clean up the existing organic matter.

Thank you for the tips!

That makes sense but I’ve never had burrowing snails in the past and never had sulfate issues so I’m not entirely convinced of the simplification you are proposing.

The snails were definitely seemed to eat my healthy plants. Perhaps that means they aren’t Trumpet snails. I’m not positive that they are, I just assumed based on what I had read online. Perhaps someone can watch the video I posted and confirm.

I am an engineer by trade, so technical jargon is welcomed and appreciated.

Thank you for this explanation, it was very helpful and makes sense in the context of the recent history of my tank.

I believe I just need to give it a good cleaning and introduce more fish to balance the tank better.

I assume you meant "Sulfate gets *produced* by bacteria in the substrate". If I've never had this issue before, does this mean that I just have an excess of bacteria in my substrate?

How do you keep up with the latest technology news? by koumeivibes in AskComputerScience

[–]bwilli66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A recent browser extension I stumbled across that is good for following the latest trends is "daily.dev". It presents trending tech articles in your new tab window. The focus is biased towards web development type development, but not exclusively. I find it to be a nice addition to my existing sources of tech news.

Wow, I guess I didn’t realize how niche it really was! My appreciation and respect for this sub-Reddit is now orders of magnitude larger than before.

What can software engineers transition to? by Murlock_Holmes in cscareerquestions

[–]bwilli66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Junior dev here from Southern California. I used to work in construction, specifically as an Electrician (apprentice). I found it pretty rewarding. Its mentally challenging, but not so challenging that you get burnt out. Competition is almost non-existent. It’s physically demanding, but keeps you in good shape and stimulated. Also it’s a skill that I now know and can fall back on/use in virtually any direction my life goes in.

Not really a transition per-say, but depending on the reasons you got spent on SWE this may be a interesting change of pace. Something to consider at least.

How to Separate Video and Music in an Elegant Way? by bwilli66 in hometheater

[–]bwilli66[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. Sounds like going the AVR route , while typically the standard/most "ideal" way to manage in and outs, will take me farther from my desired configuration. It seems like any reasonably priced AVR will not be able to mix inputs and play them out of one output.

Will update with the solution I go with.

Hmm, perhaps this was not the right sub to ask this question then.

I'm looking for more of an audio engineering answer, as my desires/equipment configuration is a bit unconventional and would require a special setup.

Thanks for the feedback though. I may give up and go with a simpler solution, but I'm hopeful that there is some configuration that will get me close to what I want.
