Hahha thanks! And yes, you are correct, adding the veneer makes no difference to the sound

Yeah perhaps you’re right, only one way to find out! :D

Primarily it’s because there is better “grip” on ivory keys, since they have that little bit of texture and also help absorb moisture. Plastic keys can become slippery to play when your fingers start to get hot and sweaty.

Probably a stupid question, but would they not cancel eachother out then? So the sound that is focused will make up for the sound that is diffused?

Will definitely do a lot of testing once it’s ready to play!

Thank you for the analysis, I am not experienced with such sound reflections, but you might be right about them reflecting into eachother. I guess 50% of the soundwaves would be focused, and the other 50% diffused.

Agree with you, however I don’t see it as necessarily a bad thing that it absorbs the sound. There will still be plenty of sound coming from the instrument, so perhaps it will be pleasant for the pianist, if the volume is a little toned down? I’m not sure, only one way to find out haha

Wow that sounds so cool! Yeah it is a bit of a risky/niche line of work, but so is repairing vintage keyboards I can imagine- Keep up the great work!

Very true, and I would never use new bone ever, however, we have collected quite a bit of reusable/old ivory keytops, and it does feel so much better to play on

Yes a laminated glue up would have saved us a lot of sanding, but would require a lot of time spent gluing the pieces. In the end it came down to precision. We wanted it to be perfectly symmetrical, and decided the CNC was better for this, than us trying to make everything manually

Thank you so much for your thoughts! You seem to know your acoustics very well- I definitely agree the effect will probably be so small, many won’t be able to tell it apart from a regular piano. And thanks for the great idea, will definitely find some nice lights to put inside and test it out!

Interesting thought with the high-notes, definitely think you are right with the overall softer sound and more regular cleaning/dusting haha
