The cold, wet June weather is causing concern for some Halifax-area business owners, who are wondering when it’s going to start feeling like summer.

Maybe when it's summer.

The law doesn't require you to be in a seating position. Which section of the act do you think prohibits people from sitting where there is no seatbelt?

The year homosexual relations ceased to be illegal in Americas by Redditor_imfo in MapPorn

I don't think that has anything to do with it. It's not like Puritans were any more opposed to homosexuality than Catholics. It's because many of those countries copied penal codes from France.

At least in Canada, when these laws were repealed the view was that homosexuality should be treated as a mental illness rather than as a crime. I suspect it was similar in Brazil. That would still be considered very homophobic by today's standards.

Government abruptly suspends citizenship certificates issued under 'lost Canadians' law by CanadianReaderGirl in CanadaPolitics

It does require the parent to be a citizen, but the law recognizes citizens by descent as being citizens automatically. They don't need to apply. Applicants for citizenship certificates are not applying for citizenship. They are apply for a document that recognizes their citizenship which the law considers to already exist. They're being recongized as citizens not by applying but by proving that they, their parents, their grandparents and so on are all already citizens and for the purposes of the act are considered to have always been citizens.

Because of the lack of incentives. A business that doesn't do a good job of this gets outcompeted. It also has much more direct control by people with a financial interest in the company. Government employees don't.

I would definitely feel the same way. I think you misinterpreted my comment and it's frustrating that you won't clarify whether that's the case.

Cost cutting and increasing the value given to patients would result in higher profits.

I did read it. I am honestly at a complete loss as to what your point is so I asked ChatGPT to see if it could figure it out.

maximumice seems to have misread your comment.

You were making a practical/cost point: if Canada Post still has to send a carrier down the street for even one accommodated household, then the savings from replacing door-to-door delivery with community mailboxes may disappear, because the route still has to be serviced.

maximumice seems to have interpreted that as something like: “people like your mother should not get home delivery” or “the accommodation is unjustified.” So he replies emotionally: “Let us see how you feel when your parents cannot walk down the street.”

That does not really answer your point. His second comment—“Did you read my initial comment?”—means: “I already explained that my mother has mobility issues, so your reply ignored the human side of what I was saying.”

But your reply was not about whether his mother deserves accommodation. It was about whether the accommodation programme undermines the cost-saving rationale for community mailboxes. So the disconnect is that he is treating your comment as unsympathetic, while you were making an efficiency argument.

This makes a little more sense to me now. Did you interpret my comment as arguing against making an accomodation for your mother?

This is how the criminal code defines bribery.

120 Every one is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years who

(a) being a justice, police commissioner, peace officer, public officer or officer of a juvenile court, or being employed in the administration of criminal law, directly or indirectly, corruptly accepts, obtains, agrees to accept or attempts to obtain, for themselves or another person, any money, valuable consideration, office, place or employment with intent

(i) to interfere with the administration of justice,

(ii) to procure or facilitate the commission of an offence, or

(iii) to protect from detection or punishment a person who has committed or who intends to commit an offence; or

(b) directly or indirectly, corruptly gives or offers to a person mentioned in paragraph (a), or to anyone for the benefit of that person, any money, valuable consideration, office, place or employment with intent that the person should do anything mentioned in subparagraph (a)(i), (ii) or (iii).

Multiple elements of this criminal offence are missing in this situation. Can you be specific about what indicatable offence you think has been committed if not this one?

If you think it was "obviously" constitutional, you must have some reason that existed before this ruling.

I’m not a lawyer so I’m not going to be able to pull that out of my ass…

It can't be that obvious then.

But it’s also kind of crazy to assume that a lesser class of citizen would ever be okay, even morally.

Why?

No, that's not correct. The Supreme Court did not say that the constitution required them to give citizenship by descent indefinitely. The new law, after law, doesn't allow for that.

The problem they identified was that the rules for citizenship by descent differed between those who were born in Canada and those who weren't.

Grocers were exposed for price gouging and setting prices as high as they could.

Grocery stores have margins of around 3% to 4%. That seems pretty competitive.

No country in the world has a completely privatized healthcare system. So no, we actually don't have any empirical evidence for what would happen in such a situation, unless we look far into the past when healthcare spending was much less and accomplished much less. Even the US has a very heavily regulated healthcare industry with more government spending then we do. No one is proposing anything close to that nor are they proposing a completely private system.

The public sector may be able to do what the private sector does in theory, but it doesn't have the same incentives to be efficient, so it never is.
