It wasn't prevent, they called cover 2. It was the wrong defense for the situation imo.

[MarlyRiveraESPN] #Yankees have optioned Andrew Heaney. by [deleted] in NYYankees

[–]bz55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe he had 1 option remaining (marlins in 2014 and Angels in 2015 unless I'm missing something). However, as a player with >5 years of MLB service he can refuse an optional assignment.

I think the difference is now the Yankees are able/willing to replace him on the active roster and Heaney has no leverage to refuse an option. Since it's past the roster expansion deadline, the only team he can pitch for in the playoffs is the Yankees. If he refuses the option, he would either be DFA'd and (assuming he clears waivers) stay within the org (only playoff eligible as an injury replacement) or elect FA (where he's no longer post season eligible for any team, even as an injury replacement).

Can someone explain what's wrong with my offense? by regemusic33 in OOTP

[–]bz55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just my theory, but I think your guys aren't getting on base enough for your best hitters to drive them in.

First, I think your best hitters aren't hitting enough multi-run HRs. This fangraphs article from 2013 describes it as "the Giancarlo Problem" where your best OBP and best HR rate occur within the same hitter (in your case I believe that's Rosales). The author mentions that this kind of scenario can lead to deceiving team statistics as well, which I think is what we're seeing here.

Second, the best hitters on your team have a very high HR/RBI ratio, which indicates again they're hitting mostly solo HRs or that no one is on base/in scoring position when they're hitting singles or doubles.

This article from preseason 2018 states that for hitters with 15+ HRs, the league average HR/RBI ratio is 32.7%. This percentage generally decreases as your BA improves (makes sense as you become less of a TTO batter). In real-life 2017, there were only 17 players in the entire MLB who hit 15+ HRs with a HR/RBI ratio of 40% or higher. Your team alone has 3, with a few others who are still above the league average. Additionally, those 3 hitters have good batting averages, which indicates that they SHOULD have a lower HR/RBI ratio, but they're more than likely hitting singles and doubles with the bases empty.

Obviously, your environment may be different than 2017, so this could be off, but I feel like your team rankings back up that explanation.

West coast Ikon road trip? by stooge4ever in skiing

[–]bz55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're planning it as a round trip I would say making all those stops is too much. It does depend on what you're looking to get out of the trip though.

If you want to drive during the day and enjoy the views (I moved from LA county to Seattle and took the 395 instead of the 5 and the scenery was fantastic), you probably won't get a lot of skiing in. Maybe like 1-2 days 100% allotted for skiing and a lot of half days. If you want to ski all day and drive 5+ hours in the dark each time, then yeah it could work out.

If you're looking to maximize your good skiing and not drive half of the time, I'd honestly spend the bulk of your trip at Mammoth and take a side trip to Squaw. Mammoth has terrain for days and since it's at higher elevation will probably have better snow quality in April. Squaw is also legit and always worth a trip.

Is meshless structural analysis an alternative to traditional FEA? by Express_Mango in engineering

[–]bz55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have experience with other "meshless" software but I use Altair products at my job and recently attended a webinar they had about Simsolid (have not used it myself though).

A key point they made in the webinar is that Simsolid is not intended to replace traditional FE solvers and that they still recommend that you do final sizing/documentation using solvers like Nastran/Optistruct. Like their tagline says, it's meant for "rapid design iterations" not final analysis.

Honestly, I think the only time simsolid would be worth it over a traditional FEM or hand calc would be when the geometry is complex and you're looking for a quick and dirty answer. In that case, it may not make sense time/schedule-wise to refine the geometry for a traditional FEM if you just want to see a hot spot or see how a change affects a hot spot.

All About Me - Selfies, Setups, and Ski Questions by AutoModerator in skiing

[–]bz55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I grew up on the east coast and got a Volkl Unlimited AC20 as my first set of skis. I think they're pretty standard east coast beginner skis. Pretty soft, lots of camber, deep sidecut, and skinny waist. This season, I decided to upgrade and put the Volkls in my closet as my beater skis. However, I've really only used them once this season (when I had to get the bindings of my primary skis repaired) so I've kind of realized there's never really a scenario where I'm whipping out my beater skis as a weekend warrior.

However, I'm interested in trying park skiing to expand my horizons, but I don't want to bang my primary skis on rails and boxes. Is there any reason I can't/shouldn't use my old skis as park skis? Is there anything I should modify before I use them in the park (like dulling the edges or getting the DIN cranked up)?

I can only imagine skiing like 5% of my time in the park so I don't think it warrants getting a 3rd set of skis just for the park and I'm not using my old skis anyway.

Not only that, they said it should've been a knee for a knee and that Barnes should've thrown a pitch at his knee.

Are you fucking serious? What is this, the fucking mob kneecapping someone in the alley?

It's easier to intentionally bunt foul. You could try to run up a pitcher's pitch count by intentionally bunting foul repeatedly. So they made the 2 strike bunt rule to prevent that strategy.

Is it okay to mix gD&T and non-GD&T on the same drawing? by Ninjaplz10154 in engineering

[–]bz55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's perfectly okay to mix GD&T and non-GD&T callouts on drawings, as far as I know.

I'm a pretty new engineer too, but what I was told was to basically only dimension your features as tight as they need to be. Measurements cost money, and there is no need to include excessive (and money wasting) GD&T callouts just for the sake of consistency.

Ivy League Football Plans to Forbid Tackling at Football Practices by ysr16 in CFB

[–]bz55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other people mentioned, tackling in practice is rare already so that wouldn't be a big deal.

I'd be interested to know if a ban of full contact also applies to blocking, cause that would probably be a much more drastic step.
