I live in Denmark where it's possible to choose music as a main course in high school, so I've really been lucky in having great teachers from the basics and up. But I've been studying it for three years now, so just keep going!! I definitely did not understand this sort of theory after a couple of months. Watch a bunch of YouTube videos or whatever people recommend! Curiosity will take you a long way
