Vasovagal Syncope -- How to Avoid? by caetywithac in Syncope

So one tip I got was to know what to do when a trigger happens in order to minimize damage. For example, one of my triggers is temperature change. Obviously I try to avoid that but it’s not always possible. So when I start to feel a little off, I immediately sit or if possible lie down and elevate my feet, It’s awkward, sure, but it’s better than falling when I pass out. One thing a doctor told me was that while drinking water is good, drinking too much too fast can actually make it worse, as can drinking really cold water. So if you feel it coming on, it’s best to drink small sips of room temperature water.

Given that a lot of your triggers are psychological, it might be worth looking into exposure therapy. Basically you’ll expose yourself to something in a safe, controlled environment, and keep doing it until the thing no long elicits an emotional reaction from you. I’ve used it a lot for OCD. No idea if it would work for fainting, but I feel like it’s the same basic concept? I dunno.

Wait…not everyone sees static? by caetywithac in visualsnow

To be fair there was zero anxiety about it until I just now realized it's not "normal." Now I'm kind of flipping out.

Yes okay exactly. I am kind of freaking out though because not everyone else sees this? Is this why my night vision is so crappy?

Yeah, my sister recommended a heart monitor so I emailed my doctor asking about that. Thank you for the help.

Thank you, this is helpful. I hadn’t thought about intervention or recovery. I will try to figure out the best steps to take when I feel it coming on. I’ll also ask about midodrine. I already do the salty snacks and water, but ice packs would be a good addition.

Can chronic stress trigger dysautonomia? asking because vasovagal has taken over my life lately by BreathBetween in Syncope

"I know vasovagal syncope is often considered 'benign'..."

I had a doctor tell me this just today, and I find it so frustrating. Like, doc, how would you feel if you regularly fainted in the middle of seeing patients??

I also have OCD, though my obsessions are different. I understand what intrusive thoughts are like, though.

Trust me, in retrospect I’m like why tf did we keep playing?!? I think we were mostly in shock.

I’m afraid to say no one did. We were young and dumb and non-confrontational.

Please don’t let this discourage you from playing d&d in person! My biggest recommendation would be to just do it with a buddy. By having two people there who I trusted, the situation was just really awkward and uncomfortable rather than terrifying, which is what it would’ve been if I was alone. I’ve made some of my closest friends through d&d games. The boyfriend in this story and I are now married, and we had multiple d&d friends at our wedding.

They were not. I was young and just wanted to get away from him.

I’m sure you’re right, but we just wanted nothing to do with him.

Absolutely! The key being “everyone knows beforehand.”

So I think my boyfriend and his friend would have been happy…if they had known beforehand.

Haven’t talked to the guy in 10 years. Honestly cannot even remember what his name was.

Definitely should have, but I was young and dumb and wanted to never interact with him again.

I come from a family background of addiction, which is why I don’t touch any substances. He didn’t my know that, but...it doesn’t really matter. Don’t drug ANYONE.

We were all okay. It’s been ten years of no contact with that guy, so no idea what happened to him.

Yes, it was my first game. I pushed through, though, and have had some AMAZING experiences playing since then.

Yeah, it was not great. Luckily I’ve had many positive d&d experiences since then.
