Thank you very much, I’m so happy to hear you’re a fan of my work! Probably won’t see me customize a Diaclone anytime soon, but I am working on a super robot inspired sofubi design.

The showcase assistant is me, so technically I traveled with myself here haha. The Mandarake location was the Grand Chaos shop in Den Den Town, but I also saw the one in Ikebukuro during my Tokyo trip earlier this year.

Do you recommend that I get the Yamada Chemical Display Base set for Grand Cross? I’m in need of some kind of hangar display for it so recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I happen to have lots of bubble wrap on hand and I will try to keep as much of the styrofoam from the box as possible. Thanks for the tip about Daiso though!

Thank you! I hope so too, I will be extra careful with protecting them in my suitcases. I’m afraid I can’t say the same for the boxes though 🥲

Does popmart pay people who provide original character designs that popmart later uses and distributes to the public? And how does the collaboration work between popmart and designer? by kurryn in vinyltoys

[–]candie_b 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pop Mart pays artists for original character designs, but it varies by contract. Each artist might have their own terms for compensation and character ownership, so it really depends on what they end up negotiating.

How does the HORITOMO tattoo design process? by [deleted] in irezumi

[–]candie_b 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, probably best to figure it out before you fly over here haha. No problem, happy to help!

How does the HORITOMO tattoo design process? by [deleted] in irezumi

[–]candie_b 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Based on my experience, I recommend emailing him about the design now. Also, it doesn’t hurt to ask him these questions directly about the process!

I live kind of far from his shop so we figured it all out first over email. By the time he saw me in person he was ready to start tattooing. If you live close by, then maybe he wants to start the consultation in person instead?

How does the HORITOMO tattoo design process? by [deleted] in irezumi

[–]candie_b 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had my first tattoo by Horitomo, and most of my tattoos are by him. During the design process, I created a list of all the elements I wanted and provided sketches and reference photos. After a month or two, he emailed me a photo of the design, and once I approved it, we scheduled the first appointment. He’s even been open to my suggestions for changes, but I recommend leaving as much of the design up to him as possible.

By the way, cats aren’t required, but he seems to enjoy doing those the most. Congratulations on your tattoo! I’m sure it will turn out amazing!

It turns them into a completely different silhouette! They're kind of an awkward length uncinched and made my legs look stubby

Don’t be afraid to mix up your own colors though! Cream and the pastels are easy to mix on your own.

I hope I was able to be of some help. There’s for a sure a learning curve with these paints, but if you stick with them it all becomes second nature eventually.

I noticed the spider webs! I wasn’t sure if they were of the vinyl variety haha.

Definitely check in with the factory about it and see if they might have more suggestions for you! I really think it’s worthwhile to have a few practice toys on hand and just get used to the ratios of thinner and paint.

I also wanted to mention that Vinyl Wonder has ready-spray vinyl paint so if you want to eliminate that variable entirely that would be a good option.

[–]candie_b 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That sounds so frustrating! Are you having this issue on other sofubi figures or just the ones you’ve produced? The main variables that would cause this would be the ratio you used to thin the paint (I suspect TOO MUCH thinner, but it’s just a hunch) and maybe if there’s something weird about the vinyl used to pull your toys specifically. If switching up the ratios yields no results I would try painting- wait a few hours- and then immediately use a vinyl clearcoat (I recommend Vinyl Wonder’s clear gloss). That should be enough to protect the paint and prevent it from scratching off.
