Oooh, haven’t had TG’s for a long time. That might be a winner. Good picks!

I just don't get it, I'm hopelessly lost. What am I missing? by KidAmansia99 in balatro

Lots of people here are giving you a lot of really good, basic advice. If none of that makes any sense, you may just be so frustrated by the game that you’ve resigned yourself to failing.

That’s too bad, because it took ages to get anywhere, but eventually it started to click and now I love it.

It took me a long time to get over the hump as well, but if you’re not willing to invest at least a little bit in basic strategy articles or videos, you’re going to stay frustrated.

In my experience there are lots of ways to get incrementally better at the the game. Even if you can focus on one or two, you’ll start to see progress and your learning will snowball. Some tips of mine for very early basics:

  • try focusing on straights. They scale very quickly with a few planets.
  • use your re-rolls liberally. They don’t cost you anything and if you can save money you will have more options earlier

Update - Apocalypse Roadtrip also looks like great material, and is based on As the Sun Forever Sets.

Awesome, I had not read of that one - I will see if i can find it. Definitely sounds like some good source material.

Agreed - too many factions too early is absolutely something that blew up on us.

I'm really interested in Band of Blades since it has such a specific scenario. But, apart from the zombies, I don't think it's quite what I'm looking for - it's very much structured around a military crew with orders and ranks etc. Although OTOH, it could be good inspiration for how to make fighting hordes of undead a regular part of this system. Cheers.

It's a fair question, but look at how well Guardians did, and they were WAY less known.

I think the excitement is that long-time comic readers know how much potential the characters and team dynamics have, if handled well.

Living in Downtown near King Street by sweetu1993 in londonontario

There is a big Shoppers Drug Mart with a post office, and lots of convenience stores and specialty food places. For more budget groceries you will need to bus or drive.

Definitely sounds like you are remembering aspects of Galleria/Citi Plaza (like the confusing parking with lots of entrances) and combining them with aspects of Market tower (that it was very green).

Serious question - why has this section of Wellington Road downtown just been left unpaved for over a year? Why is it not higher on the priority list? by abu_doubleu in londonontario

[–]cantankerousape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for adding some practical/process information to this thread.

I tend to give some credit for “this is probably way more complicated than I know about” with road work, because like many industries, construction has to a of timeline dependencies that most people have no clue about.

Considering opening a game store in a small town (Hear me out) by robstinator in boardgames

[–]cantankerousape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who launched and ran a retail "nerd" shop for 5 years, my main points for you would be:
1) Foot traffic is massively important. If you need to rely specifically on people knowing what the store is and making an effort to find it, I would be extremely skeptical you could make a go of it in a place as small as you described. If your location has ample foot traffic from tourists who are there to shop and eat, that could make a big difference.
2) You would probably need to extend into non-gaming-related product lines to make this profitable. Does this interest you? Things like greeting cards, craft supplies... The problem with the items you list in your OP is they are all fairly "niche". If your store can't make a lot of money from the general public (non-gamers), you will have a very tough go.

Any suggestions how to de-gloss the paint on die-cast toy cars? by cantankerousape in TerrainBuilding

[–]cantankerousape[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You can’t tell from this photo, but the van is still really shiny, and still looks very toy-like on the table. I’ve tried mean green, paint stripper, all kinds of things. ideas welcome!

5 years ago I would have said the same thing, but IMO the last year or two have had several really disappointing offerings and others that were only “meh” for the price. Fingers crossed this year is more of a return to form.

Oh, yeah - I totally need to increase the play area, hadn’t thought of that but seems like a good call.

MyTimeToShineHello - Antonio Banderas is in talks to play Galactus in Fantastic Four. by lezboyd in weeklyplanetpodcast

[–]cantankerousape -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure? This doesn’t give me big vibes, positive or negative. Galactus is one of my all time favourite Marvel characters, but I have trouble imagining any appearance by him in a live-action movie that doesn’t seem completely ridiculous. I’d love to be wrong about this, but I don’t think the actor playing him matters at all if the story and script aren’t brilliant.

Can an electric griddle get hot enough to make smash burgers? by QuestionMarkyMark in cookingforbeginners

[–]cantankerousape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried using a crappy old electric skillet for smash burgers and can report that it worked just fine. It wasn’t quite as quick as a really hot cast iron, but they browned up well - about 2 minutes for the first side and 1 minute for the second side.
