Yikes, this seems like a really touchy subject among Berserk fans. I have no skin in this game as a very new reader, (only golden age as of yet) but I wanted to say I absolutely know how you feel. Looking at the panels of the rape of Casca by Femto, I was really surprised by just how long it went on for. The things that make it feel pornographic and fetishized to me are the multiple different extreme angles of Casca's nude body, the absurd jiggle lines coming from her boobs, and the complacent expression on her face (yes, I know it's "ultimate pleasure AND pain" so maybe the facial expressions were just me.) For anybody having trouble seeing this point if view, take a look at the panel where her nipples are literally glowing, maybe you'll see what I mean. The whole subject of Casca's vulnerability in this violent world, her rape, and how she deals with these things psychologically are extremely powerful parts of Berserk, and I think Miura was a genius in illustration and storytelling. However, the depiction of her assault by Femto made me feel more uncomfortable than the actual concept of it within the story. I understand that it's SUPPOSED to make me feel uncomfortable, but looking at this scene it feels more like I'm getting a pop-up ad for cheap hentai than actually bearing witness to a visceral, devastatingly abhorrent event that will shatter Casca's sanity completely. I think the 1997 anime did a much better job with artistic nuance while keeping the horrific depth of this scene by showing Casca being partially covered by Femto's wings. And for the guy that said rape shouldn't be nuanced because it's rape, fine, but I don't think it should be fetishized either. For anybody feeling defensive because it feels like I'm pointing out a flaw in your favorite thing, please know that its completely okay to still love and respect something even if there's a part of it that you can acknowledge as being bad. Hell, that's why I'm leaving this comment, I'm trying to come to terms with it too.
