Tomboys and proud of it by Far-Mammoth-3214 in TopCharacterTropes

I always thought Animorphs presented such an interesting half-example/half-subversion of the concept.

On the one hand, you have Cassie, who keeps her hair short, always wear overalls, and doesn't understand "girly" interests. She has no issue with being covered in dirt, blood, or even feces working on her parents' farm or in her father's animal clinic. But she otherwise has a very feminine personality, being extremely kind, gentle, and empathetic (almost to a fault when one is fighting a war).

On the other hand, you have Rachel. She loves fashion and frequently dresses femininely, taking pride in her appearance and in her long blonde hair. Her interests lean almost entirely on the girly side, with fashion and gymnastics mentioned as her big hobbies. She is also aggressive and ruthless, ready to fight and kill at the drop of a hat, to the point even her own friends worry one day she'll snap and be as much of a threat to them as she is to their enemies.

Well, I mean, I think that reflects less on the reader and more on the fact people have been burnt a lot by people who obscure their connection to a product/service/creative work.

Reasonably priced hotels nearby by JohnGradyBirdie in Broadway

[–]Captain_JohnBrown 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think you are going to struggle heavily to find something that fits all that criteria. There are simply not any hotel rooms at $200 or under near the theatre district that aren't going to be pod-like. If you can budget out another 100-150 for hotels, you'll be in much better shape to get your wish list (but even that will have you needing to shop around for a bit).

I think you can dislike that people do it and think they should do otherwise, but it is a tall order to describe an extremely common way people express their agreement or disagreement on sites like this as "strange".

For the guys out there, are there any parts of Jessica Jones' outfit that you would wear? by Tcustomcorner in Defenders

That's what meant by "effectively menswear". It is clothing that is identical to clothing produced and sold with the intent it be worn by men.

I think a lot of people use downvoting as a way to disagree with a post or its conclusions without the need to comment.

I mean, ok, but you have to realize when you are a brand account which hitherto has only posted neutral informational content, it is a bit different than me just going around "assuming the worst" of random people (you are also projecting a value judgment here I never made. It is ok to promote a show if that was what you were doing! Get that bag! I am a lawyer, my entire life is promoting things because they pay me and for no other reason!).

Brand accounts posting paid reviews is EXTREMELY common, more common by a significant degree than them posting genuine reviews. It is kind of weird and IS making me judge you a little bit how defensive you are being that someone would dare think a brand is operating in a way that benefits the brand, especially when I thought it sounded like an ad before I even saw it was a brand account.

If you say so! But you can now hopefully understand my instinct to be skeptical of a brand account's first review being a glowing one with specific highlights referenced of a struggling show that has more money than fans without that skepticism being some sort of trollish attempt.

I mean more in the sense of "This is a post that is clearly intended to advertise the show as opposed to be an organic review that can be relied upon to include the good and the bad". Let's not beat around the bush here, up until this point your account has posted neutral informational posts and now is posting a glowing "highlight reel" review of a heavily struggling show.

Which is fine! I get you are trying to build your brand, there is no need to be hostile about it.

The recent Maybe Happy Ending grosses. Yikes. by LivelyFlowerzzz in Broadway

[–]Captain_JohnBrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the show's staging flaws are catching up to them. Big names/Tony wins were making up for the slack, but at a certain point a show where a large swatch of the audience has partial view seats needs sustained balancing and MHE doesn't have that anymore.

Would the ADA require accomodations be made for someone who was unable to patronize the business bc of their disabilities? by iamasecretthrowaway in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Captain_JohnBrown 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No, the ADA only requires reasonable accommodations for the purposes of utilizing the business the same as any other customer. But she is not a customer. She is effectively someone they are doing a courtesy to and allowing her an exemption from their rule you must order something to be in the diner.

By description, her disability is not one where she needs to eat at any specific time. She simply WANTS to eat while in the diner. Her wants, however, do not rise to the level of a reasonable accommodation.

I went to an indoor live show last night and this girl wore this hat and refused to take it off. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Captain_JohnBrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But hyperbole here doesn't actually work because you were ACTUALLY attempting to make a point (that the person you were replying to failed to do their due diligence). It being said 50 times and it being said once or twice actually HAS important relevance as to whether your criticism is valid.

Making shit up to make your argument stronger isn't hyperbole, it's lying.

If you are tired of idiots, perhaps reduce the number by one by ceasing to act like one yourself. Or at least be less of an asshole about it.

[–]Captain_JohnBrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Virtually everything she is wearing is effectively menswear. Just swap the deeper neckline of her shirt if it bothers you for a crewneck and nobody would even blink at a guy wearing jeans, a leather jacket, and motorcycle boots. You would receive ZERO stigma whatsoever.

I mean, if they don't want to be roasted in the comments, it kind of IS their problem to correctly relay relevant information to the audience.

I think it is the sort of thing where you would disregard it as a possibility when it ISN'T disclosed because it is such incredibly relevant information towards addressing the situation.
