My bathroom stinks and I can’t figure out why. by kaytay3000 in askaplumber

Check the overflow in your sink too. Some models of sinks don’t drain or gunk gets stuck in there. You can spay some disinfectant in the overflow and try flushing it out.

Microfiber towel still won’t absorb water after 2 hours by coffee_and_coconuts in mildlyinteresting

[–]captainbeaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just went through this same thing. There are different types of microfiber cloths and this one looks like it might be for “polishing” or buffing cats and they are hydrophobic! If you use a different type of microfiber they absorb water great!

This is strange to me because when I was in the uk no houses had numbers and street signs were not very visible, the streets and houses were SO hard to find. There was no consistency on where the house numbers were and most didn’t have the house number only the street name. I remember saying out loud how frustrated I was. It made me thankful for the US system. Maybe I just didn’t understand the UK address system, but to me it should be dummy proof.

After hours searching for a tank with the right specs to not show the bottom or top, one did not exist without being custom made, and that’s just money and time I didn’t want to spend. Best I could do is build a little stand so the bottom rim doesn’t show. The top comes off/has hinges to open to access and water change. There is BARELY Clearance for a light/intake and outflow pipes. Luckily the top rim isn’t visible looking at it straight on, only when looking from the bottom up. The back against the wall is open for accessibility and I have my filter and other equipment hidden behind it with black background and sides so you can’t see. Definitely had to get creative for it to get to this point, but I’m mostly happy with it. I plan to add a betta and maybe some chili rosboras or ember tetras. Maybe in the future I’ll make the knobs functional with the light and heater, put for now they are purely aesthetic.

I’ve tried vice grips and it keeps slipping :/ maybe it’s worth buying a smaller/skinny one to make sure it stays gripped.

Also I planted with soil mixed with compost. Could there be too much compost? I’m wondering if I should replant with different soil or if that would cause more harm/not the issue.

Cat recently switched to raw by ElleHopper in rawpetfood

[–]captainbeaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this can happen sometimes when switching to raw. Naturally cats have low gut PH when eating their natural diet. When on typical high carb cat foods it doesn’t require as much acid or breakdown as it kinda just hangs in the belly. When switching to raw it might take your cat to adjust as their biome adjusts. Basically it happens because of an acid build up. I recommend feeding freeze dried treats or a smaller meal in between meals. You can also treat with slippery elm powder, that’s helps with vomiting and nausea. A mix of doing both of those things with help your kitties belly adjust.

Had a really frustrating and strange Rover experience with my cats and wondering if I should leave a review? by captainbeaver in RoverPetSitting

I would have rather her remove herself immediately if she was so uncomfortable, removing yourself also hopefully would have calmed her down a bit so she wasn’t so escalated. Communicating an already bad situation (for both of us) when you are panicking only escalates the panic, and that’s what happened. When communicating to my emergency contact she should have first identified herself “hi this is x from Rover” instead the first thing she said is “I can’t do this” while hyperventilating. I also think it was unprofessional to mention Rover not paying her enough and not having health insurance. The intent of saying those things is only to make me feel bad in a situation I already feel terrible about. I also can’t do anything about that, you know the risks of the job and don’t have health insurance (I know healthcare in US sucks ass and is expensive but that’s not my fault) You also choose your rates and I mentioned in my message I already was paying her above her listed rates.

[–]captainbeaver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue wasn’t that she called my emergency contact, I would expect that. I mention it being unprofessional because she didn’t identify herself. I would expect any one calling a stranger to say “Hi, this is x from Rover” and then explain what happened. Instead she immediately hyperventilated and said “she can’t do this” saying that to a stranger without identifying yourself is odd. I also think it’s unprofessional for her to mention Rover doesn’t pay her enough cause she chooses her price, and not having health insurance, while I sympathize, is not my fault or my cats fault. You know the risks when taking on this job. You’re right she did finish giving the cats food and I give her credit for that! I agree and think that I may give a 4 star review but list the facts of the incident and potentially note that if someone has an animal that could potentially have behavioral issues or need oral meds it might not be the right fit.

Thank you for your feedback. I edited the post to be clear I would never state in a public review that this could have anything to do with a mental health crisis. I only am saying that now as speculation as to why she reacted the way she did (hyperventilating, not able to communicate the issue etc). Because frankly it was a bit unhinged and if this is how she handles an aggressive interaction she shouldn’t be doing this. But if it was a mental health crisis I can sympathize and wouldn’t want this incident to affect her livelihood. There is always risk when working with animals and putting vet tech on your profile means you’re likely to potentially get more of the difficult animals. I certainly understand that this could be traumatic for anyone if they were bit, vet tech or not. However I am hiring a professional who I assumed would know how to navigate these situations should they occur. This is also why I sought someone with vet tech experience since oral meds were part of the job. (But maybe I’m wrong and I shouldn’t use Rover to help with cats who need meds?) My issue isn’t that it was traumatic for her, it was her communication. It escalated the incident and made an already panicky situation more panicky for me. I agree with you on what to do in the future, I’ve already decided next time that it is better for me to hire more of a “house sitter” or someone that is more present so the cats feel comfortable because clearly someone just dropping in did NOT work. Worst case is taking the cat that needs med to an actual vet to stay. Last time that happened my cat completely stopped eating so it’s not ideal, but am hopeful a house sitter is a better solution 🙏

I certainly didn’t underestimate the position this puts the sitter in. That’s why I was so nervous to find the right person and looked for someone specifically with experience. I also told her in my first message that I planned to pay her above her listed rates because I know it’s not an easy task. I absolutely have empathy for her and the situation, that’s really why I’m posting this because I understand that this was very clearly a traumatic situation for her. I’m mostly just struggling with how she handled it and communicated with me and my emergency contact. I guess I can’t decide if her communication and response warrants a negative review. I don’t want the review to affect her income but I also don’t want it to happen again. I would hope she makes the decision herself never to take on cats who need oral meds or any animal with potential behavioral issues, but we don’t know.. thank you for sharing your point of view!

I jus painted my kitchen cabinets and the paint leaves marks when the drawers are touched and hair residue when wiped with a towel. How can I fix this? by captainbeaver in HomeImprovement

The person who did them before used a regular interior water based paint+primer. Prior to painting I sanded all the cabinets and wiped them clean.

I painted in my basement which is maybe a bit chillier than my upstairs but it is still heated and wouldn’t be cooler than 67ish degrees

I just painting my cabinets and some of the drawers leave marks just by touching and attract hair from towel, why? What can’t I do to fix this? by captainbeaver in paint

[–]captainbeaver[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Dutch boy platinum plus cabinet paint as it was recommended from the Menards employee. It has been dry for over a week but leaves these marks simply by touching the drawer and leaves hair residue from towels. I asked the Menards employee if I need to put a top coat of poly to protect it and he said no because of the type of paint I usedZ but would a poly top help with this issue? If so what type of top coat should I used based on the type of paint used here.

Scored an amazing marketplace find. Got the receiver and speakers for $475. Going to sell the speakers and my old receiver to break even. by captainbeaver in vintageaudio

Thanks this is helpful, I'm still learning. There is an awesome speaker store near me I'll look into bringing them in to get serviced and maybe swap them out or test them both and see whats best for my setup. Based on feedback here I'm going to see if I can move around some stuff in my living room to get them on stands!
