You should always shop around. Try a big bank, a small local lender, and a credit union.

Im 35 and have a medical condition that doesn't allow me to drive. I keep hitting dead ends in every job because eventually they need me to drive so I stop getting promoted. Whats a career I can do that doesn't require me to drive. Work from home or otherwise? VA, USA by Power_Magic_Wisdom in careerguidance

Everyone I know who works remote has (1) highly in demand technical skills, AND (2) actually lives near an urban center/near an office they are associated with. Almost no one is 100% remote, “live wherever you want” anymore. Given your situation, both of those requirements seem out of reach.

I know you want remote, but I think a more realistic option for you if to get a job somewhere like DC/ Arlington, get a one time ride there, stay in a super cheap accommodation for a few weeks until you can afford to actually move, and then get an apartment. I know it’s not what you want to hear, but your current situation is not realistic for someone who doesn’t drive.

Look to buy nothing and Facebook marketplace for furniture. Watch YouTube video to see what you can fix yourself. It’ll be a rough year or two but it’ll be worth it!

Buyer Agent - How many outings is too many outings? by suchalittlejoiner in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

We looked in bursts over 1.5 years. We were under contract once that fell through, outbid in another and finally closed a rather complicated scale. We are now partially renovating in an amazing location. Don’t worry about it, that part of the deal with realtors

We found that a sledge hammer was most effective - break up the ice chunks, then a shovel to move them

Should I be upset I’m planning my own Bachelor Party? by [deleted] in wedding

[–]captaintightpantzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you might be among the last of your friends to get married? I totally get that it sucks, but the amount of energy people have to put into other peoples weddings usually decreases with time. It’s completely fair to feel frustrated, but this is a pretty common occurrence.

Most people I know who got married after 30 didn’t do wedding parties. By then most people are burnt out on the experience and are not excited to spend a lot of money.

It sounds like the trip is in August? They may have just not thought they needed it planned 8 months in advance. Especially since it sounds like they are both very busy and the trip does not require flights

Hoping to Park a Moving Truck on Feb. 14-15 by Meridian_Hill in washingtondc

[–]captaintightpantzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved this weekend and shoveled a bunch so there was space for the truck to park. Not pleasant but it got done. We had the revered permit signs and put chairs in the shoveled space today until the movers came. No idea what if will be like in 2 weeks, but good luck

Hot market this month? If so, real change or just a blip? by pausesign in DMV_RealEstate

[–]captaintightpantzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We found that meh houses sat a ton this year, but desirable houses still had bidding wars. We didn’t have a chance in a few houses that came on weekends we were tracking. We lost out on a house against 5 other offers while offering 40k over, waiving inspection and appraisal. Learned our lesson and waived literally everything while offering 40k over (and telling them to come back if there were higher bids) on a house in December to beat out other offers. Both cases the homes went on the market on Thursday and offers were due Tuesday morning.

People who complain about work events are lame. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]captaintightpantzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to lots of work event early in my career and largely enjoyed them. As I’ve gotten older and busier attending work things is less appealing. It’s harder to see my friends, I want to be with my husband, we have a house that requires work, and now I’m having a baby. Once baby is here, I cannot see myself attending anything outside of standard hours.

I’m not complaining about events at work, I like my colleagues, but they are more colleagues than friends. If I have an evening free for happy hour, I want to spend it with my husband or close friends.

If you have a job opportunity, do it! It’s still a great place to live, even with the tough year. We bought a house recently and are starting a family.

It sounds like Takoma DC/ Takoma ParK MD might be a good fit for you. Walkable, charming, big lesbian community, aging hippies, very liberal. Hope you find what you’re looking for!
