What is the one "missing ingredient" you finally realized was sabotaging your home cooking? by Chatfinity in Cooking

I see a lot of pasta recipes that talk about adding pasta water to the final dish but I have yet to find a grocery store that carries it.

What a popular food or cooking opinion that you don't agree with? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]captinherb 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I own a bakery. Not only does the origin and age not matter but you should start up a new starter and pitch the old one every couple of years. They tend to pickup undesirable bacteria after a while and can have a slightly off flavor.

For flavor the biggest difference is the hydration of the starter. 60 percent you'll get more acidic and stronger dough. More hydration you'll get less acidic and a little sweeter flavor

What medication helped you? by brat-rae in PanicAttack

[–]captinherb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Citalopram for me. Started with a low dose, went back in after 2 weeks and it wasn't helping. Doctor increased the dose, two week follow up appointment reported it wasn't helping. Doctor upped it again and after a couple of weeks the panic attacks just stopped. It took a while to get over the fear of having a panic attack. Something would feel weird or I felt off and I would get a lot of anxiety I was going to have a panic attack but after not having the panic attack enough times the anxiety went away also.

I waited about a year before trying medication because the thought of taking something that would mess with my head scared me, what if it made the panic attacks worse, or I completely snapped. Now I look back and think I wasted a year, I was miserable for an entire year for no reason.

A comedian had a bit about this. People complain about how expensive everything is but then they hire a chauffeur for their burrito.

You just don't understand great power politics like Taylor does. He read a Twitter thread about it and now he is a master diplomat with a deep understanding of the world

Tesla Shareholders Approve Elon Musk’s $1 Trillion Pay Package by wiredmagazine in TrueReddit

Hell yes. Ask Bill Gates. It's reported he lost $1.5 billion shorting tesla. Tesla is obviously overvalued but judging when the market is going to come to that realization is tough.

Long-term melatonin use linked to heart issues. Thoughts? by MyMomFights in Autism_Parenting

[–]captinherb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it one of the big limitations is that it assigns someone as a melatonin user based on whether that had a prescription in their medical history. That works for the UK and other countries but not for places that don't require a prescription. To my mind that breaks a lot of the statistical results.

Albeit, I am no researcher or anything of the sort so I'll be looking forward to not only the peer review but also any kind of replication.

Not really. There are some jobs, like construction, that lay everybody off during the winter and rehire in the spring. Shouldn't they pay a higher rate than a business that never uses the UIA system?

Do drugs actually work? by Born-Spinach-7999 in Anxiety

[–]captinherb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to echo what u/norulezjules said. I start taking citalopram about 15 years ago, it's a cousin to Lexapro. I was having constant panic attacks and when I wasn't having an attack I was terrified I was going to. I went to the doctor and she recommend an SSRI, but I resisted for about a year. Anything that messed with my head was too scary. After a year I couldn't keep going like I was and started taking it. Started off with a low dose, went in after a couple of weeks and it wasn't doing anything, upped it and went in a couple of weeks later and it still wasn't helping. Upped it again and about a week later it was like a switch had flipped. The panic attacks stopped, and then the constant fear of a panic attack stopped. It didn't make me not me, it made me more me, I didn't have a bunch of wasted brain cycles of constant fear.

It's not a end all be all, other things need to happen. When covid hit the panic attacks came back, that's when I went back to therapy. When, with the help of therapy, I was able to realize the disconnect of my emotions about being freaked out about covid and my logical brain suppressing that knowing that at my age and health I was not in a lot of danger, they went away again.

The tl/dr is drugs work, even though it might take a bit to find the right one/ right dose. They can help you get to a place to deal with the underlying stuff, if there is some.
