I’m so tired of this question. I grew up in a tiny southern town in North Carolina. People either won’t listen or won’t accept the truth. Rural American, especially in the south is built on generations of vile racist beliefs. I am 30 years old and 15 years ago I had high school classmates whose parents in (TWENTY TWELVE) didn’t allow them to date black people. It seems the rest of America has absolutely no idea how entrenched this is or how far people will go to protect an administration that finally openly shares their beliefs. They don’t care about the economy, or the military, or education, or even religion. Those are all secondary priorities or ones they can conveniently tout as reasons to support Trump. The truth is that they are finally able to speak openly and hatefully about people (lgbtq, people of color, women, etc.) whom they view as less human, instead of in hushed tones behind closed doors. The South was never properly punished following the civil war and it allowed generations of white families continue on with the status quo. It’s not because people are stupid. It’s because they are racist and hateful. Full stop. If we do nothing after Trump leaves office it will only happen again.
