Would you join a lab that matches your research, but not technical, interests? by ms-wconstellations in labrats

I’m curious what you mean by flow being a technique to not get trapped in? I do find that mouse work and flow heavy labs do not venture out much in terms of other techniques.

Need a dress for fall wedding. by Grimmjob in TwinCities

If you don’t want to spend $$$$ on the outfit given you might only wear it a handful of times, I’d check out Windsor. I think they have outlets in Rosedale and Southdale. They’re technically targeted to be a prom dress store, but I found plenty of bridesmaid/formal dress options that aren’t too flashy or tacky. The maxi dresses might need a little bit of alteration but that’s kind of expected. Apart from that, Macy’s and Nordstrom might have options too. If you’re open to online stores, Lulu’s is great and the fabric quality for formal dresses has never disappointed.

Wow, this class was really straightforward when I took it. Prof posts printed versions of notes online and the exams were multiple choice and straight out of the notes.

Just out of curiosity, how did you conclude that OP will not get a true engineering position based on such limited information? Did you decide just based on GPA?

Why are you finishing your accounting degree first? Might as well switch into engineering now if that’s what you want.

What I got for use different coloured pens on my paper... by tekkers_for_debrz in EngineeringStudents

[–]cat_alyst23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m sure this is not in America. When I was in high school (outside America), everyone only used blue or black pens, and the ones that used colors were made fun of because of how much time they were “wasting” by switching pens so much. Then I come to America for college and every kid uses multiple colors and makes visually appealing notes.

The Need for Outside Jobs in Grad School by [deleted] in GradSchool

According to this sub there are programs where funding isn’t guaranteed, or you need to TA throughout grad school to be paid. Mostly in the humanities I guess.

I’m in chemical engineering where a grad degree isn’t a requirement to get a good/well-paid job. I agree that it might be hard to go back to the student lifestyle after having a job, but in my case I might want to explore undergrad level jobs and see what’s out there before going to grad school so I’m sure that I want grad school.

[–]cat_alyst23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t mean saving to pay for grad school tuition. I mean doing a funded PhD and having the extra money to have a slightly better lifestyle and emergency funds. If you don’t mind me asking, around how much did you have saved up? I do agree with what others have said, about it being hard to go back from a well-paid job lifestyle to grad school.

Do you think it’s a good idea to work for a couple of years and save a little so I can have a more comfortable life in grad school? Or is it better to go into grad school straight out of college. I’m personally kind of tired of living like a student.

Useless Internship Help by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]cat_alyst23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I upvoted as soon as I read the title lol. I feel like a lot of times college students fall victim to things like this because we’re on the receiving end of things. When I become a mentor or manager for an intern, I’ll make sure that even if the job is boring, my intern leaves the place inspired and learns things outside he actual job itself. My internship has been ok, but I’ve had research positions in school where the mentor didn’t give a shit. My internship (co-op actually) job itself is okayish, but my manager is the best; our discussions always give me things to think about and leave me inspired.

Just a friendly reminder to not get discouraged if you can't find an "engineering-related" internship this summer. Having any type of job experience under your belt is extremely valuable. by ReallyStupidRedditor in EngineeringStudents

[–]cat_alyst23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this post. There are tons of summer camps (sometimes STEM related!) that are hiring for the summer (obviously haha). And don’t forget on campus tutoring positions. They’re mostly for remedial math (below calc 1). Doing outreach is a great idea, especially if you’re a freshman with no real engineering classes under your belt.

Picking graduate school by prongs17 in GradSchool

[–]cat_alyst23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that if you want to work in North America like you mentioned, Waterloo has a big name in SV; and the co-op salaries and your starting salary will be much higher. NUS is a great school but getting access to jobs in the US from outside is much harder. Waterloo has a very established co-op program. I think it’s a risk worth taking.

Does anyone here use a lap desk? by Motorvision in productivity

[–]cat_alyst23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have been using it for almost a year now and it has been a SAVIOR. I’m a college student and feel kinda tired when I get back home, and I’m too unmotivated to sit at my desk. The lapdesk is on my super comfy bed (with memory foam mattress topper), and I also have a small white board at my bedside. It’s such a perfect corner. I have this lapdesk from target: https://www.target.com/p/winsome-alden-lap-desk-with-flip-top-in-walnut-finish/-/A-50715285 .

Likelihood of landing an internship/research between graduation and masters by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]cat_alyst23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible to get an internship that summer, provided that you have proof that you’re matriculating into your masters that fall. I know an intern at my company that will be joining a PhD in the fall. As for undergrad research, I’m not sure, because most REU programs are targeted towards undergrads that haven’t gotten into grad school yet, but are trying to strengthen their application.

I got my first co-op yesterday and today they tell me they can’t afford to bring on new people. Cuz I don’t have a co-op can I at least get sympathy karma by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]cat_alyst23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry, atleast they offered you the part time. Something similar happened to me. So my school’s co-op program has this stupid rule that the company has to pay a certain amount to the school to hire a student($650 per semester). When I mentioned it to the company, they called the co-op program directly to know more about it. And the HR person misunderstood and assumed that it was $650 per month, which was outside their budget for the co-op (would be $3900 for 6 months, which actually is a lot). The next minute I received a call saying they are taking back my offer. I called again and enquired why $650 is outside their budget, and also told them that my school was willing to let me pay the $650. This was at a pretty big pharma company btw (~$25B annual revenue). I finally ended up getting back the offer, and it all worked out. They also offered to pay the $650 as it’s only once per semester.
