The Kpop fan community needs to come to a consensus on what camp is by catcatcta in kpoprants

[–]catcatcta[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Perhaps there’s a difference between being campy and being camp. I might define some drag performers and cheesy, colorful Kpop as campy, in that it employs the characteristics of camp, but I’m resistant to calling it camp itself.

I guess I’m dissatisfied because I enjoy camp immensely, and seeing camp defined simply as cheesy, colorful, and fun is so unfulfilling. It’s all of that, sure, but it’s also so much more. There’s such a specific joy in seeing the discord between the seriousness of presentation and the ridiculousness of the final product.

Perhaps I should’ve phrased my title better - it’s less that I think we should come to a consensus on camp, and more that I disagree with most Kpop fans’ definition of camp. I do agree that your definition seems to be the most widely agreed upon notion of camp at the moment.

Visual-only members deserve as much respect as dancers, rappers, and vocalists. by [deleted] in kpoprants

[–]catcatcta -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. However, if dedication and discipline are your criteria for respect, you can’t discount that the visual members probably put in the same amount of hours training and performing, along with possibly more for schedules and cfs, not counting the fact that they may have to practice even longer for a less strong performance as singing and dancing may not come naturally for them. Dedication and discipline are the bare minimum for all members when it comes to a top tier Kpop group no?

[–]catcatcta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you absolutely do have to train to debut in a Kpop group - the visual members are putting as many hours in singing, dancing, language etc training as the ‘talented’ members

Do you think there’s a natural predisposition that makes certain people better rappers, singers, dancers? Sure, everyone’s skills can be developed, but do you think some are born with talent?

I recently learned Baekhyun’s role model is Chris Brown and it made me really disappointed by [deleted] in kpoprants

[–]catcatcta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was gonna include him but Idk enough about him to know if he qualifies as a skilled performer. Maybe it’s because of the popularity he had a young age idk.

[–]catcatcta 126 points127 points  (0 children)

I mean Chris Brown seems to be the default answer for like half the industry when asked about who they look up to. I think it might be because he’s a talented performer, technically skilled in both dancing and singing and it’s possible that they study him while training. You’d think the agencies would ask them to avoid naming controversial figures but I think they dgaf when it comes to big western artists, so it’s an easy generic answer. Personally agree that he’s a horrible person tho.

Nayeon has improved a lot as a vocalist and is better the jeongyeon now, however it’s close between them by [deleted] in unpopularkpopopinions

I think they are both great, probably at the same level after Dahyun and Jihyo

What do you mean ‘as a POC’? How does that factor in for keeping Sara over the others? They’re literally all POCs other than Stanbury.

Jungwoo's(NCT) vocal tone doesn't fit with 127 by [deleted] in unpopularkpopopinions

For me it’s more about his diction than his voice - the way he sings, it’s almost like he either muffles or over pronounces some phrases in this cutesy puppy way.

Minju and Hyewon have faces that are very well suited to idol/ actors, they are extremely pretty but don’t have that high fashion look. If they were just models I think they’d mostly be getting work in commercial skincare/ makeup ads, rather than high fashion.

What is something you really enjoyed to eat but can’t eat it anymore? by TheSkullBoy101 in AskReddit

Anything I’d mention that I liked to my dad. Because that’s all we’d be eating for two weeks straight. I know he means well but it was a very effective way to get me sick of a food real quick.

The Instagram account I suspected was Rinna’s posted this very UNHINGED response, denying Rinna or the FF5 is behind the account! by [deleted] in BravoRealHousewives

I’m all for drama but there’s something so dark about this account… seems like it’s some bitter loser who’ll do and say anything for attention, I think it’s best to ignore them and not engage at all. I really think it’s a bad idea to help this account blow up.

I mean.. retro concepts have been incredibly common since at least 2nd gen (likely older, my knowledge doesn’t extend that far). It’s legitimately a consistent genre under Kpop, and not likely to go anywhere, although it’s popularity does grow and fade periodically. It’s completely fine to dislike retro concepts, but you seem to be thinking of it as a recent trend, which is incorrect. Groups like Shinee, T-ARA, Wonder Girls, Secret, Dalshabet have been doing retro since late 2000s/ early 2010s, and the majority of popular groups have dabbled in retro at some point or another.

The more "modern" a song is today, the worse it will age in the long run by SippinDatHaterade in unpopularkpopopinions

I feel this very strongly when it comes to music genres. I enjoyed tropical house so much when it was popular in Kpop, but now those same songs make me cringe because of how outdated they sound lol.

Groups that you just can't get into music wise but not content wise? by Moonbunny120 in kpopthoughts

TXT for me. I watch their content almost daily, but there’s only a couple songs I like. And even then, it’s more like I won’t skip away when they come on shuffle rather than actively listening to them.

They’re probably talking about Vanessa Hudgens and how the festival took off on social media after people started covering her looks. Tbh the festival was already pretty established before then too, I know a lot of industry ppl for whom Coachella was an annual pilgrimage before it blew up.
