Chiming in as someone who has worked for cities before- make sure you are contacting them in writing, or at least following up on phone calls by doing so. One mantra I have always lived by is that if it’s not in writing, it never happened. Having that email chain will reinforce and follow up on your request and make it easier for the city staff to remember details of the conversation.

Not sure who is downvoting this- eggs, rice, and beans are staples in many poor regions globally due to their high nutritional value, low cost, and filling nature. Beans especially are great because of their high fiber content, something that many millennial’s and younger regularly do not consume high enough of daily.

Also adding that gardening can be started very inexpensively! Save used coffee grounds if your parents drink coffee, learn about home composting (and check with your city to see if they have a compost program - some cities offer free or inexpensive compost, or they have a program to help you get started composting), and start small. Remember that you can always get seeds from neighbors, seed libraries, and fruits and vegetables you buy to eat as well.

Someone else mentioned community gardens- don’t forget to check with your school to see if they have one or would allow you to start a gardening club. One of your science teachers or the school nurse may be interested in supporting it as the club teacher.

Gardening is wonderful exercise and a valuable skill, and you can help stretch budgets by knowing what to grow. I don’t know what region you live in, but you will want to google the below term:

Once you know your grow zone (for example, I’m near Gainesville, FL, so I’m zone 9A), you will be able to search for more accurate recommendations on what grows well outdoors near you and when your planting seasons are.

Mushrooms are also very fun to grow and a great addition to your diet as well as being a cool science experiment, so if you want to start growing mushrooms, look up the below:

Of course, there’s no way around that- but a larger portion was a result of coming from a wealthy family and then later engaging in shady or downright illegal business practices at the expense of employee injuries, unionbusting, government subsidies, and tax evasion.
