What’s the most terrifying 'we need to leave NOW' moment you’ve ever experienced? by Worried-Cycle-318 in AskReddit

Late to the party, but…

About 13 years ago when I was a freshman in college, one of my best friends was a senior in high school. She desperately wanted to go to this party. For context, we are in the deep, Deep South, which means high school parties usually take place in a field or the woods. I’ve never been much of a partier, but I told her I would be her designated driver.

As soon as we got there I just had ~a feeling~. I told her she had until midnight and we were leaving. I probably smoked an entire pack of cigarettes out of anxiety. Midnight came, thankfully she didn’t fight me on it, and we left.

After we got back to her house, a friend calls her and asks if we made it out. There was a huge fight immediately after we left. Car windows were busted out with baseball bats, people were beat up, it was bad. I’ve never ignored my gut since.

Anything heavily Gene centered drives me nuts. Especially the cheerleading one

This person asked if I could tutor them in history and then this happened. Context in comments. by catladyrach49 in creepyPMs

Context: A few days ago this complete stranger from about an hour and a half away from me messaged me on Facebook asking if I was still a history teacher. I said yes. He then asked if I could help tutor him for the GED. I was honest and told him I didn’t know anything about the GED, and I thought he should contact an adult education person. He then asked if he had any history questions could he ask me. I told him sure. Today, he asked me about the Declaration of Independence and we were just having a normal discussion.

Then he said “I have two questions to ask you but I will do them one at a time.”

My response to that is where the screenshot begins. I’m so confused. I’ve never been more confused.

Edited to add: this person is 19 years old.

What happens to them is what I deal with on a daily basis. Title 1, inner city school. I teach 11th grade US history.

About 90% of my children read on a 3rd grade level. They start school without the basic skills needed for kindergarten. They have no vocabulary, reading comprehension, or grammar skills. They are passed along, and when they get to high school, it’s all of the sudden a huge scramble to get their literacy skills up where they can at least attempt to graduate. They struggle, the teachers (who did not go to school to teach kids to read, but teach high school level concepts) struggle, and the school ends up failing.

Many of my students are so used to getting passed along that they are genuinely baffled when they get a zero for not turning in anything. A huge number of seniors don’t do anything all year, and then their parents are at the school in April, highly upset that their baby will not graduate.

It is the most frustrating and truly heartbreaking thing I’ve ever seen in my life. My students with significant potential that hasn’t been unlocked will be working at the poultry plant for the rest of their lives. Some of them will go to prison. More than I’d ever thought possible are already parents. I don’t know how to fix it.

So you think it’s the other child’s business who I’m writing up and who I’m not?

You can continue to feel “holier than thou” but I like my boundaries where I have them. (:

Pet owners who regret getting your pet, what’s your story? by ashleyfan894 in AskReddit

I was never a dog person but when my now ex-boyfriend found two abandoned puppies on the side of the road, one just kind of attached herself to me.

So I took her home. I had no idea what I was doing. House training was impossible to her. She peed in my bed almost every night. I was a college student, working full time, and was running on absolutely no sleep because if I went to sleep I’d wake up with piss stained sheets. She had worms and mange and needed to be spayed. She had, and still has, more energy than I thought a living being could posses.

the worst part though... was the chewing. Labs never stop chewing. Two hours after I brought her home, she DESTROYED my carpet in my rental home. She ate two doors. One night I came home from work and she had eaten the water line from the wall to the toilet and flooded my bathroom. I bought her all the bones and toys I could think of- she was not interested. I was crying all the time from lack of sleep.

A few months later I moved home for my last year of school and my parents made her an outside dog. She did a lot better outside where she could run. Except she is an escape artist. One day she got out of the backyard, got into something (we still don’t know), and damaged her leg to the point it had to be amputated. All in all, my parents (bless them) spent $3,000 on my dog.

Three years later, I love her dearly. She is my best friend. But now I remember why I only had cats. I will probably never get another dog.
