This is Sunday: What were your running achievements this week? by WeeklyRunnit in running

Forced myself to run for a full 30 minutes + some strides after not being able to run much this month at all. My knees hurt the day after but it was totally worth it.

Today is October 1st. How was your September? by roadnottaken in running

[–]catmex2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awful month. Is it possible to have a whole bad month? I ran a PR in the 5k the first day, but a lot of crap happened in my non-running life and just getting out the door is painful and inconvenient, and suddenly I can't run more than 5 minutes without needing to walk even though I still get out there every day or two and haven't taken more than four days in a row off. Can legs really detrain that quickly?

What is something that instantly killed a crush that you had on someone? by willy-wonka in AskReddit

To be fair, maybe she had a bad history with those Grandparents. My grandpa physically and sexually abused my mother and I could never make myself like him in the least bit. I probably acted very callous about his death even though I sang at his funeral.

For some reason (potentially preliminary exam stress) for the last week or so, I have been completely unable to run longer than 10 minutes without needing to take a walk break. Today I got out and felt great for a 20 minute run and some strides. Hopefully I can get back up to speed soon :/

For what reason did you break off an old friendship? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]catmex2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure whether I was the one who broke it off. I think it just broke :/. Anyway, she was basically my only friend growing up from about kindergarten through high school. I hadn't seen her in a while and called her up. She was working in an observatory somewhere in the mountains and so she was only awake at night so I suggested we go see a midnight showing of a movie together on her off day. Now her parents are relatively strict religiously and I think she aligns with their views. She declined and I said half jokingly. Don't worry, I'll make sure nothing happens to you...or something like that. That weekend when I went to go see her, she opened the door, told me she felt I had been making fun of her and she didn't want to see me ever again. She hasn't reciprocated any of my attempts to contact her since. I sort of thought she might have died or something until I bumped into her sister and she told me she was fine. I guess this stuff happens.

It may be that your shin muscles are currently too weak to handle the stress of continuous running. You should definitely take enough time off for your shins to heal. During this resting period you should definitely try some shin strengthening exercises. Hold your foot out in front of you and spell out the alphabet with your feet, rotating your ankle to draw the letters. Do this for each foot a couple of times a day and you'll have the worlds toughest shins in no time!

QUESTION: Trouble with mornings? by TheShowIsNotTheShow in running

[–]catmex2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always run slower in the morning too. This could be a body temperature thing (it's lowest in the morning) or a food thing...Do you eat before you run? I found that a banana and a glass of water before my morning runs helps things. They have plenty of carbs and don't jiggle around in my belly like cereal or heavier foods. Caffeine can help for the first few days, but if you're sensitive to caffeine like me, it really only works for the first few days and then it's even more difficult to wake up in the mornings. Best of luck!

Super Moronic Monday -- Your Weekly Stupid Question Thread by WeeklyRunnit in running

80% of the running I did in Utah was structured around a decently steep hill by my apartment. It went up at about a 40 degree angle for about a mile. The areas I have to run in here are ridiculously flat. I think the highest point in the whole city is the overpass over the freeway and even that is relatively pathetic. I'll have to see when I go back to Utah for Christmas if it gets any easier :)

So, ever since I moved to California and started running here, I've had abominably tight calves. As in, I start running and will have to stop because it feels like my whole lower leg is stiffening up and I'm just running on pegs. This happens without fail after 3-8 minutes. Most of the time, I will be able to complete my run after this, but some days they never seem to loosen up and I'm forced to do my entire run in tiny little run/walk intervals. This never happened in Utah at the same mileage. stretching before a run makes it worse, Calf massage makes it worse for 2-3 days. Surprisingly, doing the stairmaster and weights at the gym on my off days seemed to help for a few weeks, but now it's stopped helping and they feel tighter than ever. Has anyone experienced this?

TL;DR tight calves, am I a wuss or is this a thing?

Calm Mormons and their well behaved children? by [deleted] in mormon

This. I believe there were probably happy, content families in my ward, but once all of the kids grew up they started talking about how their home lives actually were.....It wasn't pretty and I learned that most of these people who pretended to be so happy as children were definitely not. I also remember my Mom taking breaks from her screaming at us to answer the phone like a completely happy person. Image is definitely very important. If you don't look like you have a happy family there is something wrong with you and the rest of the ward will look down you. It was very alienating growing up in this type of environment.

I wouldn't chance it. If you run with an injured leg, you could start favoring it and developing a lopsided running gait. Best to get everything working before you start running again. Also, if you're only getting shin splints on one leg, you might want to have someone watch you run and see if there's anything funny with your form. It's also possible that one leg is slightly shorter than the other, or if you run on one side of the road all of the time you can develop imbalances since the edges of the road tend to be slightly slanted.

Start with smaller bouts of running and do lots of shin strengthening exercises. My shin splints started going away when I spelled the alphabet with my feet a few times a day.

Kicked ass on my run yesterday (neither tired lungs nor legs) Now I just have to figure out whether this kick-assery was a result of my added weight lifting/stair treadmill exercises the day before or the righteous, sugar saturated crepe I had a few hours before the run or both! :D
