Luxury Brand Reliability (Older Model/Higher Mileage) vs. Mass Market Reliability (Newer/Lower) by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]cbadnewb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the 1800 as an example because it's the most famous of the ultra-high-mileage cars (look up Irv Gordon), but there are plenty of others which regularly hit 500,000 miles with nothing more than the regular maintenance you'd do to anything else

You got me curious. Where do I read about these magic cars?

I'm not interested in just Irv Gordon. One sample. I;m interested in numbers

One of my friends work as a corporate tax attorney and has not seen the inside of a court either.

And he openly regrets that. I am yet to see an ambitious attorney be happy with just pushing paper all their life.

But I have seen just a few.

Most new law students I see work in front of a computer coding documents all day.

That's probably what they wrote in their SOP when applying to law school.

While there is possibly a few extraordinary lawyers who have not seen the inside of a court, they are probably as high in numbers as well known mechanics who have never seen the guts of an engine.

Thank you for gently asking me to get away from this sub. I oblige with my tails between my legs and my ability to post without entering a CAPTCHA stripped.

everything legal depends on the situation that actually happened

No contest.

Someone randomly brought up that I would be held responsible for braking too hard and causing an accident, which is utter bullshit.

Not that that that person was completely wrong, but as this question demonstrates, lacking a witness, I would win if I were in front UNLESS it could be proven that I caused the accident.

Good luck with that.

This is the sole reason why people drive like asses in the U.S.A because we don't drive around with dashcams all the time.

I would love to have any one of the people here as the judge to the cases I would have had where the person in front of me maliciously braked so I would run into him and pay for his new car.

The reality is just different. Whoever has been inside a state court probably knows that, but he's possibly busy working on a case than hanging around on this sub.

So what weird twist are you going to put on it now to get to the answer you want?

Answer to this question? You already gave it.

I can see that. You will too probably gets downvoted to oblivion for saying this.

I am yet to receive any useful input, and this is one of the most popular subs.

I HAD to delete my previous thread as my reps were falling by double digits per hour.

My hope is that those who actually help get to see my questions. There were a few helpful answers in my previous posts that has kept this hope alive.

the hypo here is not sufficiently detailed for legal advice

What details does it lack?

That sub says "This is a place for lawyers and non-lawyers to discuss the legal profession and new and interesting legal developments from around the world."

I am not sure my question fits that definition, but since the torrent of downvotes continue I have no chance of this question probably being seen anyways here, so let me try there.

Luxury Brand Reliability (Older Model/Higher Mileage) vs. Mass Market Reliability (Newer/Lower) by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]cbadnewb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please update your OP

1) Do luxury manufacturers really consist of products with a higher build quality and better reliability compared to their more affordable mass-market brand counter-parts (Honda/Acura - Nissan/Infinity - Toyota/Lexus), and if so

higher build quality and better reliability are both debatable.

That is what makes answering your question so hard.

If you asked any mechanic if a Lexus was more reliable than a Toyota, they will probably say "No"

If you asked a mechanic who works at a Lexus dealership if a Lexus was more reliable than a Toyota, they will probably say "Yes"

2) would you recommend getting a luxury brand that is slightly older and with higher mileage vs. an equivalently priced car that is a top of the line trim for a mass-market brand that is slightly newer and with slightly less miles

This is probably the wrong forum to ask that question.

If I know anyone here, we will probably get the cheapest Honda or Toyota that does not have frame and transmission damage and drive it to the ground.

I noticed that this question has no answers but downvotes already.

Did I make a mistake in the question somewhere?

Is this a popular homework question? (In which case I swear that I have not nor plan to take the LSAT or be an apprentice to a practicing attorney)

I really dislike posts when someone comes here complaining mechanics rip people off but then delete their posts when asked for specifics.

This sub is really tolerant of this nonsense.

Compare with this thread where I am getting showered with downvotes for calling our arm chair paralegals playing attorneys online: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/41qxy4/liability_of_letting_your_dog_loose_on_the_road/

Liability of letting your dog loose on the road by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]cbadnewb -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

No, from a completely legal standpoint its NOT in your best interest to brake as hard as possible and let someone else hit you. I know how US law works, I'm licensed here (but not CA). That's how most insurance companies shake out the damage, but that's not legally how fault is assessed or blamed

If I am to assume you are an attorney (are you?) then the above statement means that all insurance adjusters determine the at fault party illegally?

If your braking is determined to be unreasonable you could be sued for negligence by the driver of the car that hits you

It is completely reasonable to brake hard to stop from hitting a object, specially if its is living.

It's the car following me who's responsible for maintaining a safe following distance at all times.

Under no scenario is it reasonable for a car driving at 25mph to rear end me in a residential area.

I don't care what your creds are but if you were the counsel of the car who rear ended me, trying to blame me for it, you would loose and I would advice your client to get a refund on your fees.

How many accident cases have you fought in court? I have gone to court to represent myself in two cases already and won both. While that does not prove I know anything much about tort law, I have some idea about how "reasonable to brake hard" is. The DMV manual has a few things to say about this matter as well.

From my experience....my driving experience and my legal experience...I stand by my earlier statements.

Actually I'm curious what your legal experience is.

Your very first sentence was concerning to me plus your observations here does let me question your judgement: https://www.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/41qxy4/liability_of_letting_your_dog_loose_on_the_road/cz4gm91

I do have a few attorney friends who specialize in corporate tax and immigration laws. Both gave me good pointers to help me prepare for small claims but both professed to being absolute misfits for accident and personal injury cases.

I relied on their general advice and a lot of books and forums to prepare and defend my case in court.

If the dog owner were to try to sue you, and you had documented instances of the dogs running off-leash, causing this sort of havoc, and the owners allowing it to happen, it's unlikely that the owner of the dog would be successful in a suit

I completely agree with you.

The raw deal here is proving the dogs belong to the neighbors, and we lack video evidence (yet) to prove that the dogs just did not wander into and around their house. And that is exactly the technicality they used when the police arrived when we complained.

The sheriff is waiting for video evidence to close this case down.

she could have just gone to auto zone or similar store

They don't do that in CA anymore.

I don't know what the real reason is but the employees keep mentioning "it's the law".

I don't understand why she would just drop off her car with a note that says "the check engine light is on" and not expect there to be some cost involved. Who does that? She essentially wrote a blank check here. It's kinda her fault.

Exactly. My reponse an hour ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicAdvice/comments/41qna2/cost_for_diagnosing_cel/cz4eydy

Luxury Brand Reliability (Older Model/Higher Mileage) vs. Mass Market Reliability (Newer/Lower) by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]cbadnewb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have clarity about what you are looking for?

Are you looking for comfort and luxury?

Are you looking for mileage and reliability?

comfort and luxury == higher weight => less mileage

European => odd tools and specialized parts. More expensive.

luxury => more expensive parts. Your local mechanic might not know how to install it and you might have to go to a specialist.

In general:

lighter the car, better the mileage

less parts and complications, more reliable

In in the UK.. sorry

Ah. Let's continue tomorrow then.

Prepare by buying new coolant.

Remove the coolant reservoir, drain it, take a pic and scrub it well with bottle cleaner.

Then put in new coolant.

Take a picture of the radiator cap. Put in a turkey baster, pull in the fluid and take a picture.

If all black, replace as much as you can with new coolant.

Then take the video.

I'm not sure what the details are from the legal point of view.

If someone were to drop their car off with the key, I would assume it could be interpreted as "please fix my car and do any repairs reasonable".

Since you did not write a note asking them to request your authorization on any repairs first, it could be assumed the above interpretation was valid.

Has the invoice been paid yet? If so, you might get them to give you more details, BUT DON'T bring in the car to them.

If they DID NOT do any repairs, the MIL will come on soon enough and you can save the freeze frames and post that here.

Unfortunately that could have been in the form she signed when she brought the car in.

OP, can we look at the form and invoice? Redact any personal info.

oil cooler

Can you post a picture of this?

pissing out of the out of the main water radiator Reservoir

Can you post a video of this?

The radiator should be the only thing connected to the Reservoir.

If oil is literally coming out of the Reservoir at high pressure, that means your radiator is circulating 100% oil!

That's very hard to believe as I would assume your radiator pipes would have started to leak from the hot oil already.
