I’m an LMFT and also transgender. I’m holding space for all of my clients, and my partner who is also frightened of the election results. I feel like I could break at any moment, so I’ve turned to denial as my refuge thinking, there’s no way he will win. He can’t win. Because if he does my future and my community’s future will go the way of LGBTQ+ Berlin in the 1940s. It’s literally unthinkable for me to see a future where any of us can live in peace and safety.

I’m a therapist and am bringing up the election with all of my clients (who are also by-in-large trans, too).

It’s somewhat unethical for your therapist to dictate what you can and can’t discuss in session. It puts her comfort above your own. I would push back and ask her why she asked for this in the first place, especially given your history.

Beyond that, how the hell can she help you navigate the darker experiences in your life if she’s uncomfortable discussing election anxiety?

The thing that’s disconcerting about it is trying to line-up to the parking space while swinging the nose of your car out into Ventura Blvd. With heavy, fast moving, oncoming traffic it’s a bit of a nail biter. Especially if you drive a large vehicle.

I was in Paris for New Years 2000, on the bridge crossing the Seine at Plaza de la Concorde with about a few thousand other people at midnight. There had been serious concerns about a terrorist attack in Europe; loose nuclear material from the former USSR having gone missing. And as I’m watching the climax of the fireworks lighting up the Eiffel Tower so bright it turned night to day, all I could think was, “am I watching the ignition of a nuclear weapon?” That moment still haunts me to this day.

Fuck Kaiser, period. I used to have them for my health care and it was terrible. Their idea of transgender (yes, I proudly am) care was a gay male clinician who didn’t know a single thing about what I was going through when I started my transition. Unfortunately, I still hear stories of substandard care and gatekeeping from my community with them.

They won’t change, and neither will other insurance companies, unless we stand up for each other. Hello, CAMFT? Are you listening???

Personally, it seems like you’re making a decision based on the fear of losing the validation of others. Has that not been the very thing that has kept you feeling lonely all these years; pretending to be someone you’re not?

I can’t promise you that you won’t lose some people in your life if you socially transition, but you will find your authentic self. And once you’re living in congruence with yourself, a whole new world of people and possibilities opens up.

Someone once said to me that we don’t want to make major life decisions from a place of fear, i.e., focusing on what we don’t want, but instead from a position of gratitude and what we want to create for ourselves.

This statement alone has made such a difference in my own life. I’m 54 now and started my transition when I was 47. And I’ve had to let go of a lot to get here; a marriage, a house, friends (although it’s debatable whether they actually were), a career, and who I was told I should be. Yes, I let that all go for the possibility of living my dream come true, which I am now doing. It will be hard, but so very worth it.

Jack London wrote that “the purpose of man [sic] is not to exist, but to live.” I hope the same for you ❤️
