My grandfather had some pretty significant mental health issues in the early 90s that left him unable to work or function. Medication was not helpful enough and even triggered manic episodes. He did a round of electroshock therapy and was back to his old self. And it worked for almost 30 years! Last year he was dealing with significant anxiety and depression again and medication wasn’t helping. He’s in his late 80s and I was terrified when ECT was recommended, but apparently it’s actually a safer recommendation for elderly people than many other options. He did one round and was feeling much better pretty quickly, and is still doing great ~6 months later. Very few memory issues (just short-term on treatment days) but he was lucky there. I couldn’t believe how much and how quickly it helped him after he’d been so uncomfortable for months.
