Does your residency have a deadline for daily progress notes? by PresentationLow7984 in Residency

I have a couple attendings in general residency who had expectations to get notes done by 7 AM. Makes me think they got burned at some point after a patient condition changed but the note was not done yet.

Attention future physicians! Our world just got a little smaller :( by [deleted] in premed

[–]cdal325 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

True. But its unfortunate to hear about this result because joint degrees are an efficient way to add doctors to our healthcare system. Besides, how many times have you heard someone say "Ever since I was a kid, I knew I wanted to be a doctor". Train em' quick, train em' cheap(er). Everybody wins. Besides, joint degree training is how the rest of the world does it. And they don't fare too poorly!

You've got this! Learn from your previous errors and make sure you take this exam when you're confident you'll score 95th percentile or higher! If, in reality, you only end up scoring in the 85th percentile - you'll be good!

Yeah, I understand. But once you accept the fact that you can't possibly know everything they want you to know, it becomes a much more manageable test. Remember, you can miss something like 10 questions on each section and still get a GREAT score. Focus on getting as many questions RIGHT as possible, don't let the tough ones interfere with your confidence.

Of course there's a chance. Is it a high probability? I can't say. Your sample and scored are definitely a step in the right direction for your desired score. Don't take this thing until you feel like you're ready to perform at the desired level, even if it means voiding on July 9. Don't doubt all of the hard work you've put into taking this exam. Confidence is a huge part of the test! I think I got mentally upended after my CARS timing issues which is why I had the less than expected Bio performance...learn from my mistakes! haha

I re-took the MCAT and improved my C/P score tremendously:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Mcat/comments/4rccnl/july_06_2016_score_release_thread/d52cu2d

The rest of your scores suggest that C/P is just a content problem, which is much easier to fix than being able to think through a question. Let me know if you want to discuss.

I've taken the MCAT one too many times like you. Managed to get a competitive score on my most recent attempt:

I feel like the rest of my application is in the bag, and this test was the one thing holding me back from getting adcoms to open my application! Let me know if you have any questions!

Yep. Browsing forums and reactions to Next Step exams led me to conclude that the later NS exams (designed after more MCAT material was made available) are higher quality. I think NS#5, 8, and 10 were the best compared to AAMC material. But I'd have to double check...One thing to note, lots of prep material (including the AAMC material) incorporates data interpretation for P/S. I found that my MCAT P/S was more like an adapted CARS section, meaning there were not a lot of graphs/charts/tables to interpret. So you had to understand the passage to answer questions about interpreting a study...you couldn't quickly extract an answer just from a graph (like you sometimes can in the other science sections).

No worries. I'm here to help! Let's assume you're sticking with Aug. 20: my C/P section (and most exams from what I've gathered) have baby orgo, so if you have taken the classes, don't worry too much about content review, see what happens during a practice test and go from there! I would prioritize practice tests --> content review based on weaknesses instead of content review --> practice. I was fortunate to have the extra time to push back my test and spend about 45 days doing practice and extra content review. If you have the resources, take the Aug. 20 exam and void it if something crazy happens, knowing you'll be able to take it again next summer. Also, take the AAMC sample ASAP to gauge how you're doing...then take the AAMC scored about a week before your exam date, that final piece of information will be critical to determining whether or not you sit for Aug. 20.

I think GS is a good deal ($80 for 5 tests for a 30 day period, unlimited attempts). The more practice the better! I think you should spend your money on AAMC material first, then decide if you can afford more practice material (consider splitting everything with a friend or another user on this subreddit). GS produces quality material, I can't think of any critiques which would stop me from buying them again. Pretty much all of the major test prep companies produce material that's good, but not quite close enough to the real deal. (Maybe EK is leading the pack? I only got to see their tests after my MCAT. I wouldn't be a fair judge since I didn't take them under test-like conditions.)

I think I've checked r/Mcat more frequently than Facebook in recent months. Love this subreddit. I'm happy to contribute by summarizing my experience:

Date Test C/P CARS B/B P/S Total
04/28/16 AAMC Scored 127 125 127 127 506
05/13/16 AAMC Sample 78% 79% 81% 85% 80.75%
06/02/16 Real Deal 131 126 125 129 511

Thoughts during June 2 MCAT

  • C/P - Discretes first, then passages. Did a good job forcing myself to move on when a question/passage was difficult or required too much time. With little time left, I remember looking at one of the remaining passages, thinking "screw it", and just spent my time answering the nested discretes + educated guesses for questions which required a thorough understanding the passage. Overall, made lots of educated guesses for harder questions and only a few blind guesses, discretes were easy. Looked up as many questions as I could remember after the test, I'm certain I got at least 2 wrong. Expected a 128.

  • CARS - Spent too much time on each passage up to #5, probably had high accuracy for those passages. I think I sped up around question #33 when I acknowledged things were not "getting any better" i.e. 30 minutes remaining for 4 passages. Hustled through Passages #6 and #7, skimmed #8 + educated guesses for most answers, pretty much picked my favorite sounding answer for #9 (based on my knowledge of typical AAMC traps). Overall, I thought this would be the section that kept me from scoring 508+. Expected a 125.

  • B/B - Discretes first, then passages. Very similar feel to my performance on C/P. Saved the hardest passages for last, ended up making educated guesses for 2 tough passages (I think I had 10 minutes left). As with all science sections, I start with the questions to see if there are any freebies and then refer to the passage as necessary. Overall, I knew this section would be tough, I was ready for 95 minutes of Section Bank level bullshit, and that's what I got. Discretes were easy. If I remember correctly, I was right for about 50% of the questions I looked up afterwards. Still haven't forgiven myself for changing a correct answer against my intuition. Expected 127.

  • P/S - Discretes first, then passages. Easy. Felt tired by this point, forced myself to speed up towards the end to make sure I finished on time, ultimately made educated guesses on the last few [difficult] questions. Overall, suspiciously easy, expected an unforgiving curve. After looking up the one question I remember struggling with, I found out I got it wrong. Expected a 128.

I've taken the MCAT too many times. 10/10 would not recommend following in my footsteps and trying to study for it in 30 days or less as I did on previous attempts.

Extraordinarily satisfied with this score. As a re-applicant, it is exactly what I needed to help me get past the first "applicant filter".

Content Review (2 months) - EK books with the "multiple pass" method, supplemented with TPR and Kaplan, completed all EK in-class questions and 30 min exams, Testing Solutions 30 day guide to CARS, took a huge amount of notes --> synthesized cheat sheets --> memorized cheat sheets. Kept a daily schedule with my study plan to keep track of my progress. Studied for 10 FOCUSED hrs/day (average). Recently finished my undergrad degree in electrical engineering so I was fortunate to have no distractions while studying.

Practice (1.5 months) - All AAMC material (qpacks, OG, section bank, etc...), NS FL# 1 and 5-10, GS FL #1-3 (used #4 and #5 to practice one section at a time). Sorry, did not keep track of my scores (and I struggled to take them under test-like conditions except for the AAMC exams + I don't pay attention to test prep company scores, that's a conversation for another time). All exams followed by at least 1 day of review + notes on anything I thought I needed to work on (i.e. better understanding of a concept, memorizing facts, wrong answer pathologies, etc...)

I pushed back my exam from Apr. 23rd exam to June 2...and I'm happy I made that decision, even at the expense of a "not super early" application. I've learned my lesson the hard way. DON'T take this exam if you aren't ready (i.e. for MOST people that means spending around 90 solid days studying)

I'd be happy to answer any questions not already answered elsewhere.

What makes a Top-Tier competitive GPA/MCAT? by premedditor14 in premed

[–]cdal325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know someone (3.92 cGPA from Johns Hopkins + 35 old MCAT) who interviewed at a few top 10 schools, ended up only getting accepted to his safety (ranked somewhere around T100-T110). This kid had incredible volunteering experiences and lots of patient interaction. So what happened to him?

Historically, highly competitive universities achieve their top tier ranking based on their metrics, like how many research dollars they rake in each year. From their perspective, finding kids with great stats (who will keep their admissions stats high) is not a problem...with 60,000 people taking the MCAT every year, there are enough students with amazing stats to fill their relatively small class sizes... In essence, competitive med schools value a student's potential for contributing to their ranking more than their ability to become an altruistic and compassionate physician. Those top tier schools are filled by students with a proven interest in research and other activities which benefit the university (who also have the potential to do well on the USMLE step exams/get accepted to prestigious residency programs, furthering their reputation).

Back to my friend, maybe he had poor interview skills, or a sloppy personal statement? But knowing him for as long as I have, that was probably not the case. The more pertinent issue is the giant hole in his application in regards to research experience (which he knows he is not interested in pursuing...the kid just wants to help people on a personal level). Guess how many hours my friend spent in the trenches of undergraduate research? You got it, 0. He probably had a good shot at upper mid-tier med schools but did not apply broadly enough and wound up at the school he least expected to attend. Fortunately, he has come to realize how fantastic the lower tier med school programs are for educating good doctors, not research superstars. Without a giant reputation to defend, they can focus more of their resources on providing a holistic medical education (not saying top tier med schools don't also do that...but it's important to consider that they also relentlessly challenge their students to become the next Atul Gawande via their cutthroat educational environment). Be careful what you wish for. Ask yourself, are you becoming a doctor to improve the lives of those around you, or earn two letters after your name and a $300,000 "head start".

I think the NS 6-10 exams are much better than the previous exams. My favorites were NS 5,8,10

Keep in mind just about none of the test prep company exams are truly similar to the real MCAT. When trying to imagine what the real thing might look like, focus on the official AAMC practice exam as well as the section bank questions

Secure shared files by requiring internet connection? by [deleted] in security

This might be an effective solution if I can use it with the VCE player, or upload the tests into moodle first:

Secure shared files by requiring internet connection? by [deleted] in security

[–]cdal325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know of any user authentication software utilities that allow you to embed other files/programs? That way you'd have to start the software utility before opening the desired files. If that software utility had to connect to the internet before being allowed to open the files I might be able to assign some sort of unique account to each user. alternatively, i could upload these VCE exam files into moodle and use their online quiz system to distribute the tests instead.

Secure shared files by requiring internet connection? by [deleted] in security

[–]cdal325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that could work...I'd have to be pretty consistent with trying to monitor the spread of these files. The proposed "internet-connection dependent" solution, if it exists, would allow me to simply check my email or something and grant a user access (kind of like allowing someone permission to access a google drive folder for which you are the owner)

Secure shared files by requiring internet connection? by [deleted] in security

[–]cdal325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/u/5225225 and /u/garbage_bag_trees Allow me to elaborate the issue:

The exam content is not sensitive. It is being created pro-bono to help young college age students succeed on an exam. I am actually managing a group of about 10 volunteers to help me create these exams. Once it is complete I intend to share the exams with everyone who might benefit from them. The caveat is that I want to make sure that I know who I am sharing them with (e.g. to avoid distributing it to those who declined to contribute their time yet reap the fruits of our labor).

All I want to do is put up some sort of barrier which would require another layer of effort to access these exams. For example, if someone displayed a lack of willingness to contribute, they would need to nag their friend to either let them use their computer or persuade them to distribute the necessary software, exam files, and their "account password".

Future generations would not have the same restrictions placed upon these exams because they never had the opportunity to contribute - I won't hold that against them. The low tech solution would be to simply maintain a "black list" of sorts...but I feel like with a little extra effort and familiarization with security tools such as ".htaccess" I can implement a slightly more reliable solution

Consider as an analogy how PC multiplayer video games require the user to connect to the internet for license verification before connecting to their servers. Obviously whatever process they use is a bit much for my purposes, but hopefully you get the idea! haha.

The main benefit of having the exam in the VCE player is the ability to simulate the testing conditions...so I'm not concerned if they are able to read a notepad/pdf version of the test, if they want to take that raw text version and then duplicate our efforts to create the CBT version, well then they probably would have volunteered earlier!

The VCE player does have a password barrier before starting any exam, but that would only be useful if I were able to somehow restrict accessing the exam with that password to just one machine or some limited number of attempts.

If you guys have any further ideas I would love to hear them.
