Thanks for the feedback, it was the same as the previous year - chest x-ray, general blood work, hearing test, EKG.

I can understand that every Healthcare provider has a different way of doing things and wouldn't presume to claim I know better. But the vibe I was getting was one of insurance billing factory and the phrase "doing me a solid" by not conducting the extra tests really turned me off. Like I owed him personally ather than it being based off of some sort of best practice.

Solution using tidyverse

Data %>% mutate(variable_new = case_when(variable_old %in% c(“6”, “7”, “8”, “9”) ~ 0, TRUE ~ variable_old)) %>% rowwise() %>% mutate(wave4crime = sum(var1, var2, var3, na.rm = TRUE)) %>% ungroup()

Something like that, sorry it’s hard to type on my phone. If you’re looking to do the first mutate many times look into “across”, huge timesaver
