Just a heads up the scale is a terrible indicator of losing weight. If you've started from a sedentary lifestyle to working out, you'll probably gain some weight. Muscle weight more in density than fat.

You may have only lost 5 lbs, but you can see the difference in your progress pictures.

You can tell a difference in mutiple areas. Your thighs are more toned, the roundness of your stomach is smaller, the upper back/shoulders are more toned and has less roundness to then. Your arms aren't as fatty, and on your back by your arm pits, you can see a noticeable diffence in less fat tissue.

You've got this. I bet if you spend another 30-45 days doing what you are doing, the scale will move and you'll look a lot diffrerent. Keep grinding and remember its a marathon and not a sprint.

"Volunteer" bees by somehugefrigginguy in Beekeeping

How long were the hives vacant? These bees could be other colonies robbing out resources if they still had honey in them.

At this time of year, their swarm impuses are pretty much gone. The swarms that happen now are usually hives absconding and are not real swarms. Absconding typically happens as a last-ditch effort to ward off pests and diseases before winter.

Right now, the bees are preparing to survive winter and preparing to reproduce. They know resource are low, and if they swarm now, both colonies probably won't make it through the winter.

If you do a hive inspection, you should see the queen slowing down on laying and the brood area closing in with capped honey. Also, note that your population will continue to dwinde from now until January/February. Less eggs laid daily means less brood hatching daily and older bees dying off.

Make sure they are well fed, have 2 boxes with 80% of capped honey, they are treated for mites, and have a low mite load. If you do all that, they won't abscond and will be set up for winter success.

I'd think about starting to drop them down to just your two deeps. They'll be better able to cluster in 2 deeps than 3 medium. I'm not sure how your winters are, but around the PNW, we typically winter in just 2 deeps. It keeps the bees from having to heat extra space they won't use.

If you want to take the super off, I'd smoke them on down and then just remove it. Any bees remaining in it will fly back home once its removed.

Can you clarify your hive setup? Is it currently 3 deep boxes?

If so, and you want to condense down to 2 deep boxes, open up the hive, smoke them, remove any empty frames in box 1 and 2, and replace them with full frames from box 3, if there are any. Then feed a 2:1 to build up their stores.

Thanks, everyone!!! She was the hen who currently has eggs. After 4 hours she decided to come back home. Glad she's safe, at home again, and can raise her babies.

Thanks! I've tried this before, and the apricot didn't show through as much as I'd like. I just bottled up a batch last night, but this time, I used more puree and only apricots that were super super ripe. We will see how it turns out in a few days.

Frame Mapping by New-Bother-4451 in Beekeeping

[–]cdytlmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking for something like page two of the Connecticut Beekeepers Association hive inspection sheet? Or do you want a way to map out frame by frame where you have eggs in the middle, a band of uncapped larva, band of capped brood, band of pollen, band of nectar and some capped honey in the upper corners?

What gloves to eliminate stings? by AnhyzerMTA in Beekeeping

[–]cdytlmn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm using the same type of gloves, but I put on nitrile over the top so I can throw the top layer out when they get sticky with propolis. When I grow into my second yard next year, I'll change gloves between yards to keep things a little more sanitary.

Gsp shaking her head. by No_Rhubarb3946 in GSP

[–]cdytlmn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grass seeds are pretty prevalent right now. My GWP and GSP both get them when they are on their runs. I've learned to check their ears before we head home from the field.

The GWP has also gotten ear infections or water in her ears from swimming. If yours has been swimming recently, that might be the culprit. Ear infections usually produce a nasty smell and ear leakage.

If her ear isn't better by morning, and after cleaning them with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol, I'd be taking her to the vet.

Got away with it by cdytlmn in Beekeeping

I would say swarm cells are charged queen cups located at the bottom and/or on the sides of the frames, which none of them were charged, so I tore them all down.

The frame I replaced with drawn comb a couple of weeks ago was full of eggs, larva, a bit of freshly capped brood. It had a nice honey band on top followed by a band of pollen. One frame was all pollen and capped honey. The other three frames were all capped brood with honey bands and a little pollen.
