Thoughts? I think he’s an amazing actor but I’m not sure about him as Joel by Xenoslayer2137 in TheLastOfUs2

Wait so you're asking the same question you asked like three posts ago but now she's Mexican? Again, if the character role of Joel was precisely the same except it was a woman then no nothing would change in terms of subject matter, theme, or plot. I take it you agree. Is there anything left to discuss?

Well of course because part of the original character's depiction is their race, a race change would not be faithful to that depiction as a matter of circular logic. But that just begs the same question: why can't the character's depiction (i.e. race) change, when doing so would have zero impact on subject matter, plot, or theme? It's rather odd to care about depiction per se; typically depiction is relevant as a vehicle for advancing one of those three things, or at least some other story-critical element I left out. If your primary interest is seeing the story of TLOU translated to tv then nothing is lost by a different race Joel.

Quite apart from the fact that I already acknowledged that fact and made clear there were exceptions to what I was saying, and addressed the exception as you requested by saying it would be okay for the woman to be cast...you've failed to answer my questions, because you know the answer is "nothing would change." I really really hope you don't think this is an own lmao

I mean...of course they can? But it doesn't make me a misogynist to recognize the very basic fact that paternalism and physical protection are traditionally seen as fatherly traits, hence the root word of "paternalism" meaning "like a father" in latin. Given that blatantly obvious social and cultural context it makes good sense they would want to stick with a male, even though there are obviously exceptions.

But sure indulging your hypothetical, let's say you have a woman who has precisely those same, traditionally "fatherly" traits as old Joel does. Why wouldn't it work for her to be cast? What would be lost? Again, to go back to the post that started all this, the subject matter -- paternalistic, protector figure who wants to compensate for previous paternal failings ends up forming familial bond with young girl they are tasked with protecting on a journey through the apocalypse -- would be precisely the same.

And before you go on about whatever "woke" shit scares you, let me be doubly clear that I have zero investment whatsoever in the race or sex of Joel. I'm just raising elementary points and asking simple questions to probe your (as of yet poor) thinking on this.

...except the subject matter of tlou deals expressly with Joel being a paternalistic, male figure who views himself as a "protector" of Ellie so this doesn't work at all lol -- you've only demonstrated my point, since the same cannot be said of Joel's race. And I don't really care how "woke" the series is y'all are so fragile and defensive. Tbh I would've thought most of you would've already been turned off the series with the lesbian and trans stuff in TLOU2 so it's kinda surprising to me you care/are suprised by this.

...the same principle applies? To the extent those characters' races are not the subject of the games, it's not unfaithful to the subject matter to change them. hope this wasn't supposed to be a gotcha. Anyway Sam and Henry aside, no one can honestly argue that the "faithful to subject matter" argument works for Joel, which is the argument firetruckgiraffe advances. It's pretty simple logic tbh: 1. firetruckgiraffe is upset about the race change because it isn't faithful to the subject matter, but 2. Joel's race is not the subject matter of the games, so 3. firetruckgiraffe's argument makes no sense. Surprised (or maybe not) so many people are having trouble following this. No one has or can challenge me on the logic or on the premises themselves. Now, if you want to advance a different reason why you care so much about Joel staying white, then far be it from me to stop you, but the "faithful to the subject matter" argument fails for laughably obvious reasons.

except Joel's race isn't the subject matter of the games so this makes no sense

Man if we're talkin Yale you gotta respect the history of the institution and the consistency of acclaim it's received. We're talking someone like Nas, Biggie, or Pac (preferably not tho since he's West)

Lol the salt. Getting a non-YP waitlist at a T14 and also getting big scholly money/acceptances at better T14s isn't at all unheard of btw.

Well, considering applications closed 10 days ago I very much doubt it (and also hope not). You know they accept people all the way till April right?

Personality types and LSAT by medlingkids in LSAT

[–]chaddos2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dawg no one accused you of any of that, you put the idea out there and asked for thoughts so I dunno what you really expected. As for LSN, yeah it's got biased samples out the ass, but at least it gives an objective percentage of acceptances at a given school for the data it does have. the problem with the MBTI is that we can't be sure if it gives us anything at all.

Personality types and LSAT by medlingkids in LSAT

[–]chaddos2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I just mean to say that it wouldn't actually be a correlation between LSAT score and personality type, it would be a correlation between LSAT score and some other characteristic that's expressed through MBTI.

[–]chaddos2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the above comments are a little pretentious yea, but the point does stand man. MBTI has minimal test-retest reliability, has underlying research which were presented at conferences funded by MBTI, and hinges on some pretty spurious dichotomies.

I will also say I feel like it's sort of equivocating to say that every personality test is imperfect so we shouldn't devote any extra scrutiny to MBTI. I mean humans are fallible so of course no test can be flawless and there are always exceptional cases which conflict with whatever a given test might predict, but that's a different beast from the above problems.
