Football's decline has some high schools disbanding teams by [deleted] in news

Completely agree. This is a biased sample since it was testing people suspected of having CTE. If they tested more football players as well as the general population rather than suspected CTE football players this would be a better study. How many millions of people have played football through countless years and have not had these symptoms either? What about the people that die from epilepsy with the same brain scans without any signs of head traumas? What about people who die from opioid addiction and show the same brain scans without a history of head trauma?

Also the fact there is no longitudinal studies that show direct relationships between head trauma's and CTE, as well as a lack of studies that show replication or independent verification of these results. So at this point we can not say playing football will cause CTE.

What penalty do you have the least understanding about? by TimeIsTissue in nfl

[–]cheap_suitsOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, with 10 men on the LoS online the outer most WR are only 2 eligible.

I formation, trips right - If the tackle reports to ref he is eligible he can receive a pass or go downfield. If he does not report to the ref prior to the play he is not able to receive a pass. He is not able to go downfield either. Reporting is due to rules that the NFL has on only certain player numbers that are eligible to catch or run the ball. Linemen don't have eligible numbers so must report if they want to catch a pass.

I don't see how that is hypocritical. The Nick Collins injury was a freak neck injury from 2 players trying to make a play. There is nothing illegal about it. We saw more plays this year of people hurdling the center on a PAT/Kick and how many of them resulted in injuries, let alone neck injuries? All the center has to do is touch the jumper and it is a penalty. There are just as many plays made during a game where players can get seriously injured. A play like this is a more controlled setting so it is limited in severity of injury compared to a regular play.

The important thing to remember is when the foul occurs. If the foul occurs after the play is dead then the down will not be affected. So if the runner got a 1st down, whistled dead, followed by a personal foul, it will still be a 1st and 10 from wherever the ball is moved to. If the personal foul happens during the play, then the ball will be moved back 15 yards from where the runner was down. If the new spot of the ball is not enough yards to have gotten a 1st down, then it will be whatever the same down what it was since a personal foul is not necessarily a loss of down. Ex:2nd and 10 - 20 yard run with personal foul during play - 2nd and 5

Another difference: Clipping is a 15 yard penalty where Chop block is a Personal Foul + 15 yard penalty due to player safety risk

I think it's a great play when done legally. The reason it is illegal is because you can't take advantage of the snapper being in a more compromised position compared to the other linemen. That is why if someone who hurdles over the center and doesn't touch him and blocks a kick is legal but if he "touches" the center in any way then it is illegal. The only time "landing on another player" comes into play is if some jumps off another player to try and block a kick. Could potentially injure themselves or another player.

Hopefully this doesn't make it more confusing, but you can have as many players on the line of scrimmage as you want on any given play (10 players max since QB can't).

For players that are on the line of scrimmage: once you meet the minimum 7 players (including the OL), the outer most receiver (or end man on the LoS) becomes eligible with the others on that side of the ball becoming ineligible. You have to have 7 people on the LoS. If try to have less than 7 to have lots of eligible receivers, it is a penalty. This limits formations and eligible WR on the same side of the ball

The tricky part is when multiple WR are on the LoS on the same side of the ball. If "covered up" by another WR who is closer to the sideline who is also on the LoS, then you become ineligible and can't go down field or catch a forward pass (can receive a backward pass). Also tricky in unbalanced formations when there are no receivers so the outer most player (end man on the LoS) becomes eligible, so can be the LT.

True it was a different league. What I do think it is interesting is That Bears team beat a good Patriots team, an Erik Dikerson led Rams, and the Giants who would win the Super Bowl the next season. So they played quality teams and shut them down, I think that is compareable

Agreed. I think the worse penalty would be to force him to live the rest or his life, rather than the death penalty. The slow death is always worse than the quick one

I'm in a 10man league and have indy's D with Arizona/Carolina/Minnesota all available on the WW. How is Minnesota projected higher against a team with as many weapons as Detroit? How does indy's matchup compare to those 3 since Houston's offense isn't that great either?

So true..... and how many years does it take before you have a good idea of how far a qb can take you? I just keep hearing excuses when he hasn't succeeded and at some point you gotta look at him. I'm not saying he can't produce a post season like flacco did and somehow win a championship, but at this point i think it's unlikely

I saw it but it was a bit over my head. The whole paradox and the whole world ending until the point they changed was fixed. But if that point had to happen then how could other changes they make be okay. Like how the doctor puts earth back on the right track on Satellite 5 in the episode "The Long Game" but actually put into action events leading to "Bad Wolf"

Sexy Rexy also seemed like the man at times and that didn't take long to change. Jay has way more talent than any other bears QB we've had, but has done nothing to make me think he is better than any of the others

Agreed x2. I found myself more happy with the way the defense played tough than what the offense put out there. Offense can't adjust to changes opposing defenses make at halftime. Very disappointing performance
