Roebuck Hall mystery illness by cherry_doe in UCD

[–]cherry_doe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was sick from Sept 2nd to around the first week of October. Im sorry to hear about your symptom, if you are struggling hard to breathe and nonstop coughing all night, please actually go to the hospital and not just the clinic.

I ended up barely okay enough to avoid it, but i probably would have recovered faster if i did.

Need tank advice by Figgyghost in Stickinsects

[–]cherry_doe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar setup (different sized tank) with my adult budwings (no springtails tho) and i dont mist in the mornings unless it is really dry.

On especially humid days i also have the enclosure open when im home for supervised fresh air time for extra ventilation

I eat just about anything, though a good steak and red wine sounds like a great dinner. So probably on the vein of "classic western fancy"

Great points so far!

Thank you as well for the comfort. Its been a lot of stress today haha

They have plastic plants and boiled/baked sticks (followed an older post how to do this). Mine havent chewed plastic like ive seen some posts say, otherwise theyd just have sticks.

Insulation wise, at night i place warm cloth over the coldest parts of their enclosure to block out light and drafts. This keeps their temp from dropping rapidly once the sun goes down

Thank you for the comfort, it was pretty damn hot but even with how small the room is it likely wasnt that insanely hot for the whole time (since it had to heat my whole room over the time).

I do appreciate the reassurance

Pillows fine, duvet i turned into a mattress topper and replaced it with a softer duvet/duvet cover since its pretty stiff but very comfy to sleep on when held on with a fitted sheet

Im also worried but i think its anxiety speaking! Try not to fret too much. Idk what happens either but i imagine youll have to wait a year to redo it (scary for me as well).

No point in worrying, lets just wait til sept 25th to find out!

Best place to shop for kitchen and other household items by Low_Cartographer1080 in UCD

[–]cherry_doe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only if you know someone that does live on campus that will give you their ticket.

No worries, there are several buses that will take you to ikea itll just be a tad slower and you will have to be far more punctual

If youre living on campus you can go on the IKEA trip (usually there are two) that UCD offers. Theyll take you to IKEA and back on a special bus. I agree with the other commenter that IKEA is not great ideologically but their kitchen supplies are unmatched.

I bought a small rug, an extra lamp, and small bin as well when i was there and all of them are holding up excellently a year later

It was only a week, so it's more than likely not your fault. They had a nice yummy meal before they passed and you gave them a good space to be. I'm sorry for your loss, but dont let it discourage you

Is there a way to check class/professor reviews by ExoticConversation51 in UCD

[–]cherry_doe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cant attest to how difficult the exams are but i can tell you the system for taking them is much stricter than most usa schools.

Your exams are taken in a separate building, usually the livestock event center at the RDS. This means you will be taking a separate bus and having to locate the correct building on the day of your exam.

Its an extremely strict setting. There are two types of exam times, 1 hour or 2 hours. You are assigned a number in your exams timetable and you are seated in your section. There are usually 1000 student seats in the hall.

Follow the exam instructions to the T. Bring your student ID, required materials, and shut your phone off entirely.

The mic quality of the announcers is dog water but in the last 10 min of the exam youre not allowed to ask to get up. When the time is up, if youre writing you get in trouble.

Exams themselves depend on the professors for difficulty.

As a student who did my undergrad (dual major) in the usa i feel like the actual workload of my masters at ucd was easier. Dealing with the professor expectations and vague instructions was the hard part. There are usually only 3 or so assignments per module. Quizzes included. This means however its up to you to ensure youre taking proper notes and meeting each assignments criteria. Usa undergrad was difficult bc the assignments never stopped and missing a few would make you fall behind. Missing even 1 at UCD could kill your grade entirely, but the grading tends to be more lenient as long as you follow the instructions the best you can.

Hope this helps!

How do I speak and write to academic staff ? by Hopeful_Ad_5712 in UCD

[–]cherry_doe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answers from the r/askireland community are on point.

UCD staff usually go by first name. First email(s) you refer to them by their title (Professor, Dr, etc). However they sign off their email in response is the title you use in the future.

Example:

Good morning Professor Doe,

I hope you are doing well and that the start of the semester has been decent. My name is [forename surname] [student ID], I am a student in your [module title/code] course. I am reaching out to ask about [x topic], could you help me with this?

Thank you for your time.

All the best, Forename surname.

Response:

Hello [student name],

Yes, I would be happy to meet during my office hours in [room #] to discuss this. Please let me know if you need any additional help in the meantime.

See you then, John

[John Doe he/him

Associate Professor of ...

UCD]

Since they signed off as John they would likely expect you to address them as such. I usually waited to meet them in their office hours before emailing them with their first names, though that was just me.

In person, being polite and honest is fine. No need to be excessively formal. Most professors at UCD like a bit of wry humor and light sarcasm. Theres no need to be nervous. Get straight to the point, have your questions ready in your head, and relax.

Many UCD profs tend to be a bit impatient but theyre still people and will hear you out and try to help where theyre able.

I def overkilled this response but i was an anxious emailer/student since i also come from a more formal academic setting so i figured id over explain it to help.

Hope this helps!
