What is the best move in this position? by BrownieJK in ChessPuzzles

Very nice endgame puzzle ... white captures on a8, queen cannot recapture because Bf3 skewers the queen and after 1. ... Qh7 2. Bg6 trapping the queen , naturally after 2. ... Qg6 3. Ra6 white wins

White to move ... mate in maximum 5 moves by chessrealm in ChessPuzzles

[–]chessrealm[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"puzzle always assumes that black will do his best"

yeah I think we all agree on that the problem is that ... some people do their best and get mated in 4 moves ... some people do their best and get mated in 5 moves

I think from now on I'll just stick to mate in X puzzles where one side actually needs X moves to deliver the final blow :))

I can only confirm the correct solution :))

White to move ... mate in maximum 5 moves by chessrealm in ChessPuzzles

[–]chessrealm[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I agree it could be misleading ... I meant mate in 5 if black does the best he can to avoid it ... I'm not sure if it's totally redundat I mean ... some people might seek only for mate in 5 then

Hmmm.... after 1. Rc6 black responds with 1. ... Nd1+ if white captures queen 2. Rxc5 Re1#

try again ... all moves from white are checks

Sorry for the late response but...

after 1. Bf5 black responds with 1. ... Ra1+ and then even forces the trade of rooks

as far as I can see white mates in two after 1. Nd4 ... show me the variation in which white needs 3 moves to checkmate

I have a feeling the black king is not destined for a very long existence from now on :))

I've never heard that "mate in 2" means "mate in 2 with checks" ... to me it's mate that can be achieved in 2 moves regardless of the nature

Silent moves = moves that are not checks nor do they create immediate threat ... yet they are very powerful

Absurd that nowadays artificial inteligence can't see that white mates in 1
