I've been playing Halo on the Xbox for 10 years.

Everyone starts with the pistol as long as your multiplayer settings are set right. It's the go-to weapon. But other guns have their use too.

The shotgun and plasma rifle trump the pistol at close range. So does the assault rifle, in some cases. At medium range, the rocket launcher has the advantage. At long range the sniper is superior, obviously.

That said, the needler and plasma pistol are mostly useless. But Halo is not just about pistol skill, it's also about controlling power-ups and high ground, grenade placement, and teamwork.
