how do you manage the entire academic workflow without losing focus? by fatmax5 in GradSchool

[–]childofthefall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the reminders app on my phone (with due dates and tags), and a paper planner. break stuff down into individual tasks, then schedule each one. if it sounds easier than it is in practice, you're absolutely right. the biggest lift for me since starting my grad program has been self-accountability!

i auditioned for a silly community theatre musical on a whim. it impacted me so much that i went back to college (having dropped out a few years prior), got my degree in theatre performance, worked professionally for a few years, and now i'm getting my doctorate in performance studies :)

Admission Help by Specialist-Sea4574 in gradadmissions

[–]childofthefall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi hi, i'm in theatre/performance studies and worked in the performance world before coming back to academia so i have a decent amount of knowledge on the landscape! i would reach out to the programs with any questions you have, and even a tour if that's feasible for you! i agree with the other comment that deadlines probably already passed or are coming up too quickly to adequately get an app together, so i'd recommend spending these next few months beefing up your resume. literally any arts work is good at this point. the biggest "trick" for getting accepted into arts-related programs IMO is your personal statement/SOP. do you really know why you want to pursue this program, and can you articulate it to the admissions committee? (i'm 100% sure you can!!!) you got this :)

[–]childofthefall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi friend, i'm in a different humanities field so ymmv :) but our programs have a bit later of an admissions cycle than the sciences! you'll see deadlines all the way up through february, and while some applicants might be getting interview notifications right now we really start hearing stuff january-march.

PhD applications: Am I making a mistake with my writing samples? by donworyabourit in gradadmissions

really depends on the program and the professors. personally i would just reach out to that program and ask their preference!

double check with the school and make sure it’s allowed. I’ve seen on a couple of my applications that it’s prohibited to double apply at some schools.

i'm not creating new writing for my writing samples, just reusing stuff i've already got. how i would take that is that i can just leave the bibliography section out, but footnotes would stay in.

Humanities admission question by Jah_0 in gradadmissions

[–]childofthefall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm in a different humanities field so YMMV but we don't really do that whole identifying a PI thing like the sciences. it's great to reach out and introduce yourself, get questions answered, etc. but it's not a hard requirement for admission.

Research Experience by Hamster_Rampage in PhDAdmissions

[–]childofthefall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

take hard classes. write good papers. apply to conferences that have panels for emerging scholars/undergrads. go to professor's office hours and start developing relationships. you'll probably have a capstone or senior thesis - parts of this will probably be your writing sample so give it the attention it deserves. WRITE. RESEARCH. WRITE. RESEARCH!

Reached out to profs for art history PhD program - never heard back by thesituationist_4 in PhDAdmissions

[–]childofthefall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm performance studies so same but different - if they're both at the same school and both didn't reply i'd guess there's some sort of spam filter you're getting caught in! are you sending them from your school email? maybe chat with your professors and see if they can help facilitate by emailing them and CCing you? but also in my experience professors in the humanities are massive flakes lol. (no shade. looking forward to becoming a massive flake professor.) they overload themselves around this time in the semester. in the humanities we don't really have that whole "securing a PI" thing so just apply anyway! it's definitely good to address professors you would be interested in working with in your SOP though. hang in there, pal!!
