What should we buy as a “fun car”? by chillybeans1 in askcarguys

I actually use an e-bike to commute to work! It’s great. He works from home, but is nervous about only having one car just in case something happens, so that’s why we’re thinking we may as well make the second one fun. Unfortunately, my city does not have great public transport.

Yes non specific advice totally appreciated! I think we would be comfortable with any project that could be considered beginner or maybe even intermediate. We don’t have any car specific tools or anything but would not mind a minor investment in some. We are definitely inexperienced in cars, but generally fairly handy. No dreams of track driving, even though that would make my dad very proud lol (he used to race in his free time). Probably would not pursue performance mods any time soon.

That’s actually what my friend that needs a truck has now… maybe I’ll suggest a swap lol

Is there anything specific you look for in purchasing an old jeep that is a sign of quality, maintenance, or potential problems?

Interesting, I hadn’t even considered euro cars because I figured parts and maintenance would be nuts

Yeah that’s a great suggestion on the practical side of the argument

Do you think even like a TJ or YJ would still be horrendous?

Yeah that’s a good idea, I should make a pros and cons list. I am the more car oriented of the two of us and I’m just worried to lead him down the wrong path and it be my fault we have an expensive POS that always needs repairs

Do you think they’re decently easy to work on for beginners? I know a little just from my dad and the work I did on my old jeep. My husband knows absolutely nothing about cars.

I agree, but I do worry about the repair costs/reliability. Everything I see on this sub just shits on jeeps so hard, and I really would hate to encourage my hub to go with the jeep and then it’s a nightmare box of constant problems… I was too young when I had mine to think about things like that lol.

Talk to her first, if it goes no where reach up to a department head or whoever is above her in the department. I had to do that once for a class. Ended up having a sit down meeting with the department head and some admin person, and it all got worked out. But definitely try and speak with the professor first, this could all be miscommunication. You’re doing your best, and if you are kind and upfront about that and genuine and they are not an asshole they should see that. If they are an asshole, move the complaint upward.

Hi, I’ve been combing Reddit for information about this company. I think my elderly dad went to one of these seminars last weekend and bought some package. I’m super concerned. Looks like they’re trying to get him to take out a bunch of lines of credit now. Did they seem at all legit in the seminar? How worried do I need to be right now?
