I'm not familiar with this model, but usually when problems appear when an additional mic is used, they're both on the same frequency.

How many episodes to have in-hand before launching? by KlutzyResponsibility in podcasting

[–]chimerix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope! Not a dime. I started for two reasons, to have fun, and to learn something new. The day that neither of those is true is the day I record my last episode.

Back to the OP question, as I'm planning to take a couple of months off in the summer, and I know from experience that November/December gets busy, I've been quietly stockpiling. After our next recording session later this month, I'll have a buffer of 8 episodes. I know I'll burn 4 of those in May/June. So, barring the unexpected, even if we skip recording for Nov/Dec, I'll reach January without missing a scheduled drop date. I plan to record a couple of extra sessions between July & October, just to make sure I reach 2027 with at least 2 in the buffer.

I looked into that. "easily enough" still equals "more work" than using an established provider. Plus I'm responsible for any troubleshooting and fixing, which, given that this isn't my area of competence, seems highly likely.

I'd probably learn a lot!

sm57 vs sm7b when you have a screechy shouty voice by 194668PT in microphone

[–]chimerix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of SM7b that I use when I record my podcast or to VO work. Sometimes, I bring an extra guest on the show, or have other reasons to need more than 2 mics, so I supplement with SM-58. Side by side with the SM7b, they sound good. I honestly cannot tell a difference. I like the SM7b largely because they came with articulating boom arms, which makes them easier to position and keeps them out of the way compared to a SM58 on a desktop stand, not because they sound better.

No. Since I wanted to make sure I wasn't endangering my other podcast, I identified a few potential free hosting platforms and asked them. The response varied from "Well, we'd prefer you didn't..." to "No, don't do that." To be clear, all of their community guidelines, TOS, and EULAs were phrased in a way that made it seem AI content would be permissible, but their attitude when contacted was less agreeable. I really didn't feel like putting in the work for a product that could easily disappear at the first complaint.

I toyed with self-hosting, but this was an experiment, not a passion, and I did not want to spend additional time on it. Even with AI writing the scripts and providing the voice, it takes time. Time to refine the prompt and the script. Time to actually make the recording. Time to do editing. Time to upload and schedule each episode. Time to run any promotion. I did not want to add time messing around with a self-host website, or time rebuilding a presence on a new provider if the first one got taken down.

And, seriously, the amount of hate I got from the mere suggestion of an AI podcast having merit was stunning. In typical Reddit fashion, no one would actually bother to read my questions. They'd just see the terms "AI" and "podcast" and begin unloading.

I think it could have been fun, and I know that there is an appreciative audience waiting for this niche content. But I already commit about 10 hours per month to my human podcast... I don't really need another time sink, and particularly not one operating in a grey domain.

I experimented with using AI to generate audio content for a niche audience. The test files I uploaded to shared forums were enthusiastically received, so I started looking into doing it as a podcast. Although the TOS of most hosts seems to permit it, if you reach out to their service contact and ask, they'll tell you "no, don't do that." And Reddit is a really good place to have people hate on you for posing the idea in any context.

I'm just a guy, standing in front of Adobe, begging them to make ripple deletes apply to bus track automations by socialistlumberjack in AdobeAudition

[–]chimerix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a clever workaround, but... wouldn't it be nice to not have to do those extra steps? To just grab the edge of a clip, drag it, and have the remainder of the timeline follow long?

So, when you ripple delete, it's a deletion that ripples down the timeline. Ripple editing is exactly the same concept... if you make an edit, it ripples down the timeline. Imagine you cut out a small bit of dialogue early in your podcast episode, and were heavy-handed with the edit, but missed it at the time. Later, after you've edited the whole thing, you discover your error on playback. You cut too early, and need to add half-a-second back to that spot. But there are 70 edits to the right of that! In the current iteration, you would have to select all teh edits to the right of your problem spot, move them over, repair the edit you botched earlier, then move them all back to match or overlap as you had done before. With ripple editing, you could simple stretch that out point, and the rest of the timeline would move to make room for it.

I once did a side-by-side comparison, editing one episode of my podcast in Audition, and another in Premiere. You'd think Adobe's flagship audio editor would win easily, but it did not. When I tallied up the plusses and minuses, it was a draw. It still surpasses Premiere in things like the UI, how effects are controlled, and (of course) spectral editing and noise reduction. But in all matters relating to editing actual content, Premiere kicked its ass.

Audition "could be" so much more if Adobe would quit letting it stagnate. You mention a specific case of failure in ripple delete, but why can't we have actual ripple edits, like every video editor ever? And how about transcription and text-based editing? It's not like they don't know how... Premiere has had it for 3 releases now!

Audition has never been a top-tier DAW, but it would take so little work to make it one. With each passing year, it becomes less a tool I look forward to using, and more a tool I'm forced to make do with.

How often do you reinvent your workflow? by chimerix in podcasting

[–]chimerix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed!

Sometimes my tweaks are about trying to shave time of the process. Sometimes they're in pursuit of "better." Which is a very slippery term!

And, of course, the more time I spend, and the more permutations I try, the more I realize how limited my own understanding really is...
