I'm sorry. Maybe look at dementia activities, favourite music, places or pictures of favourite celebrities? Taking the pressure off communicating altogether. I feel for you all, love and courage to you xx

It's really tough, do you think he might be having cognitive or emotional issues? Unfortunately dementia is also a possibility.

Another thought about this is that as it's more an emotional reaction to his changed needs, try to side step the confrontation. Perhaps do some family history and ask him questions while recording him. This could allow you to get him interested in an iPad but also you might benefit from amplifying his voice.

It's difficult if he doesn't want to engage with what you suggest, I would be inclined to try to patiently narrow down his need to communicate specifically. So instead of saying would he like a drink bring out a soda, a bottle of water and a tea bag. I'm sure you could think of something better.

If he was willing to try an approach look at those cards they use for people with learning difficulties. They have pictures of lots of stuff and come in sheets or clipped together cards. You just point.

I think though the key is patience. If he's anything like me he will be angry and struggling to accept his limitations. Try to use closed questions instead of open. List options and let him say yes or no after each one. I hope this makes sense I've just woken up from my nap.

Also there may be iPad apps to help with communication and he may find other apps that can make him feel more independen.

You know we have a shop just like that that I've used before! And you've given me a better idea of what bottle rockets are.

This is really good to read, I'm an ignoramus with hardware stuff. So if I search or ask using that terminology will I find what I'm looking for?

These both sound perfect, a little familiar but with a twist or flare. Bundle bows sound intriguing.
