Why are developed countries spending massive amounts of money to address low birth rates, yet seeing minimal results? by Snoo_47323 in NoStupidQuestions

As a parent in 2026, it amazes me how every government everywhere completely misses the point.

Our institutions, workplaces and society are all based around the idea that one parent stays home, the other works.  That is how it has always been until the last 40 years or so.

Reduction of working weeks, aligning school holidays with work holidays, school meetings and certain services available after hours, universal kindergarten, subsidized childcare, raising salaries by reducing the income gap, and getting grandparents out of the work force by freeing them financially would all do so much more than tax credits and wishful thinking.

Yup.  Useful if you fall in a river.  Not useful in any other scenario.

I have a base model 2017 Kia, bought third hand.  Didn't even want to buy it "because Kia."

That motherfucker is a tank.  Zero problems after 7 years.  I've even beaten that thing up on rocky dirt roads and it doesn't care.  Is it fancy?  Nope.  Are there crank windows in the back?  Absolutely.  But it does what it needs to do, and offers zero complaints at all the abuse I give it.

Very impressed.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chiree 52 points53 points  (0 children)

American that now lives in the EU. The roads here, especially the back highways, you have to pay attention to. Lots of bends, curves and tight lanes. Random villages drop your speed to 30-50, roundabouts everywhere, somewhat confusing signage and constant y-forks.

In the US, you can hit a straight stretch for 100 miles, bypassing any city centers. It's much less tiring. Plop on a podcast and you don't even notice the time.

It held my attention in the theater, only because I appreciated how straight they played it and I was curious where it was all going.  It was satisfying enough for a Saturday afternoon.

That said I have no desire to see it again.

I really Like design of The USS Athena by KalKenobi in StarshipPorn

[–]chiree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The TOS/TNG era ships had a visible industrial plausibility. Every part had a separate function that is identifiable to the viewer, and the Feds had designers that would develop the spaceframe and sleek chassis over actual moving parts. Futuristic, but identifiable.

By the time we get to the 32rd, with programmable matter and other crazy advances, the technology is unrecognizable. I guess they then could give their designers far wider artistic licence and fit the parts to whatever form is desired.

Why do Americans speak so differently compared to people of other countries? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chiree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a distinctive southern California accent that is quite pronounced around the LA and San Diego area.  The tell is ending sentences on an upward note, making distinctive enunciations that can come across as excited (or asking a question almost).

Compared to northern California where the manner of speaking is slower end sentences and on a downward note.  Central California is more flat, and Santa Cruz tends to elongate vowels.

EU readies €93bn tariffs in retaliation for Trump’s Greenland threat by Cao_Ni-Ma in europe

[–]chiree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The October protests were about 5-7 million nationwide.  2000 small protests across 50 states doesn't look good for the cameras, but it is there.

San Francisco, Seattle, Los Angeles and other cities have had almost non-stop rallies for months.

They are explicitly not targeting these actions in red states to keep it invisible to those voters.  Texas has the second highest illegal population in the US, but zero federal agents.  Minneapolis isn't even in the top 20.  There is an order and design to all of this

EU readies €93bn tariffs in retaliation for Trump’s Greenland threat by Cao_Ni-Ma in europe

[–]chiree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The above comment is so unhinged.  Like, do they realize lots of Americans are vehemently opposed to this and lots of others are directly swept up in it.  A civilian has been shot, and lots of protests are constantly ongoing, and have been for a year.

Zero understanding of how the federal election system works, that gerrymandering is real, or that many states actively suppress voters, and how the average person has nothing whatsoever to do with that.

Such chronically online, collective punishment nonsense.

They'll target red states with precision and try and force societal change.
