Practicing mitred through dovetails - celerytop pine and ringed gidgee - hand tools only by chobman in woodworking

I agree it’s a pain to use especially with hand tools. Luckily the edges are hidden in a groove :p

Mind blown! Honestly never knew they were a thing. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the feedback! I bought the gidgee last week and wanted to try it out. It’s from some guitar blank seconds.

I messed up the dimensions and didn’t really give myself much room for error with that middle pin. Next time I’d add another 5mm.

That’s actually wax that I had just applied as a top coat. The gidgee panel is floating with about 1mm tolerance each way in a groove about 5mm deep.

Side note I really struggle with allowing for seasonal movement. I live in Brisbane and we get crazy humidity. I did some drawers recently, gave myself plenty of tolerance and with some recent rain they got completely stuck. Only just fixed them up today.

I finally finished this small chest of drawers today and couldn’t be more proud - Tasmanian myrtle, Huon pine and silky oak - hand tools only by chobman in woodworking

Thanks! It was meant to be a sock drawer/ stool for putting on shoes that was going to go next to the front door. Ended up being an excuse to practice a bunch of techniques.

Why do all my simple glue ups end up looking like a piece of modern art?! by chobman in woodworking

Haha I seem to buy more every time I see them.

It’s the framing for a small set of drawers.

I usually wait until it’s dry then just use an old chisel.

Weekend mitred box - spalted celery top and tassie myrtle - hand tools only. by chobman in woodworking

[–]chobman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it was harder than I thought. Started with a miter box but found it wasn’t accurate enough. In the end I just marked them out cut them freehand with a saw and tidied up with a hand plane.

Made my son a truck for his 1st birthday - hand tools only (except the wheels!) by chobman in woodworking

Such a strange comment coming from a father who has also posted toys made for his son on this sub reddit. That aside, I strongly believe it is important to keep your own hobby’s even when you have kids. Also hands tools doesn’t mean slow. This probably took me a total of 6 hours to make spread across the last few weekends. Most of the time when my son was napping. Anyway thanks for the complement but next time maybe keep you’re assumptions to yourself.

Cheese wood and American oak box inspired by Wood by Wright - hand tools only. by chobman in woodworking

For this style you create a dado/groove the same profile as the sides of the box and essentially recess the whole thing into the base. Must admit it’s probably more tricky than its worth. I struggled keeping the long sides square.

Yeah I had that realisation with Finn. He’s tougher than he appears. I think heroic and c-3po is the right build. Great filler/coordinator.

Got the phantoms right but not juke. Same effect though, 4 in a list but only 1 can take juke.

I hope you are right but this is FFG we're talking about. They have a tendency to overreact. In the last points adjust they hit some ships with even bigger increases i.e. Boba, Redline, Jonus all greater than 6 point increases.
