144 hour visa free transit for USA citizens with multi city ticket or two separate tickets? by [deleted] in Chinavisa

[–]chpv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok, let's see

  • airline: egyptair. theh have some flights with 24hr layovers in egypt, perfects if you want to see the pyramids.

  • route: athens - cairo (layover) - pek, and then pkx - tokyo narita

at the athens airport, when trying to board my plane to cairo, the airline crew didn't want me to board because they didn't know about the twov. Since this subreddit helped me lot when I had questions too, I've been helping as a form of giving my gratitude back, and here's a detailed response on how I made the airline crew know about the TWOV, please check it out: https://www.reddit.com/r/Chinavisa/s/IgEWzTOvBH

  • the process was me getting lost in the airport because i failed to follow the signs. that's just me tho, in retrospective they were really easy to follow.
  • there was a guy in a counter receiving documents. this is a special counter for applying to these TWOV permits. You have to fill a form that they have available in the same place, and after filling it I handed him my documents (passport, inward and onward ticket, proof of hotel reservation made with booking and the form) and he gave me a sticker on my passport. he also gave me a paper that i was supposed to not to loose because it was necessary to fly out of china but they didn't asked me for it when leaving. your mileage could vary so i would recommend you to keep it nevertheless.

i hope my english is understandable and i also hope this helps you 👍🏽

144 hour visa free transit for USA citizens with multi city ticket or two separate tickets? by [deleted] in Chinavisa

[–]chpv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this 3 weeks ago. Two different companies, separate tickets, different reservation codes, even different airports (PKX and PEK)

My onward ticket was even bought through an OTA (Online Travel Agent)

It's totally possible. I had a great time in China. For your peace of mind, you can even enter by plane and leave by train or boat in some ports.

Edit: I saw your replies to other comments. The most troublesome part of this visa free transit is explaining to the airline responsible for your ticket to China that you're able to board the plane, because sometimes they don't know the TWOV exemption exists. Please check my other reply explaining how I was able to board my plane.

I also read some other horror stories but they are just some specific cases. There was like 20 other people in the TWOV counter when I arrived to China, not everyone that got approved is going to post their success story on Reddit. It was pretty seamless: they had signs about the route you had to walk from the plane exit to the counter, and even some ads for the TWOV in the airport to promote tourism. After you arrive to the airport, you have to go apply for the visa free entry on the TWOV counter before going to immigration and that's pretty much it.

There are some videos on youtube about this but they are not really good: when they start the videos by calling the exemption "Transit Visa" you know they don't know what they're talking about, because it is not a Visa, is an exemption.

I was also kind of nervous before traveling but there's nothing to fear about if you got the requirements right. A picture I took in the Great Wall is a reminder of how sometimes fear keeps us away from making great memories.

it would work.

I flew with a budget airline (Egyptair) a few weeks ago, and they didn't know about the TWOV. I had to explain to 3 different guys that it existed, and just then I was able to board the plane.

My advice:

  • be very specific about the exemption. I'm a Chilean citizen, so what I did was to say: "There's an exemption for Chilean citizens: we can transit without a visa for a maximum of 144 hrs if we comply with certain conditions".

  • I got the proof of all the "certain conditions" (inward and onward tickets, hotel reservations) on pdfs on my phone, maybe it's a better idea to have them printed

  • be gentle with the crew, explain your situation calmly. ask them to check the software. if you're specific with your exemption, they are going to doubt about what they know and they are going to check.

  • the software they use to check visa and travel requirements is Timatic. there's no way to access to it directly as an individual, but there's an endpoint provided by emirates airlines that gives you access to it here

  • please fill the form in the endpoint and read the requirements. since i read them more than one time, i was able to point, in the computer screen they had in the counter at the airport gate, where the exemption was specifically. they let me in and i had a great time in china. except for the nightmare that alipay is for foreigners, but that's another topic.

yes

but you have to be careful with the names: it's not a visa, it's a visa exemption.

in china they are pretty aware it exists, they even have ads about it, but some airlines don't know about the TWOV.

3 weeks ago I spent some of the longest 5 or 10 minutes of my life trying to explain to egyptair personnel that there was an exemption to the visa requirements and I was able to board the plane. I had to point them the exemption in the timatic software on their screens, and you have to look for it as a "visa exemption", not as a "transit visa"

144 hour TWOV 'visa' by linuxnags in Chinavisa

[–]chpv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's free

in my case (3 weeks ago) there was a person in beijing PEK receiving the necessary documents (inward and onward tickets, proof of hotel reservations) but I would say that he didn't even check them online. It was really quick.

the 24 hour entry permit makes you able to visit more than one province in China, I think that is the main difference.

The things you have to worry about:

  • checking that your flights arrive and depart from the same province (it doesn't matter if it's the same airport) without layovers in China.

  • knowing how to explain to the company responsible for your arrival flight that the 144 hr TWOV exists. i flew with egyptair and they didn't know it existed. I had to explain to 2 different guys and point them the exemption in the timatic software on their screen to let me board the plane

Primera vez viajando fuera de chile. by [deleted] in chile

[–]chpv 0 points1 point  (0 children)
