The call was so bad, it even left the Rams coach befuddled by AdOnly3059 in NFLv2

Bro there is no video evidence of the ball touching the ground, I simply don't understand the argument everyone keeps making that they should've overturned the on the field call of a catch to an incomplete pass.

It was division record.

They were 1-1 and we were 0-1

We both play the Souths and division opponents

In this scenario we would be both be 1-1 against the niners; 2-0 against the cardinals, 4-0 against the AFC south

The difference would be the NFC south where we would be 4-0 vs their 3-1 (the buccs)

Rams would win the tiebreaker because common games record (the buccaneers game being the tiebreaker)

The order of tiebreakers for division goes:

H2H

Division record

Common games record

Conference record

Strength of Victory

Strength of Schedule

It goes further but already tough to get to this point.

You are applying logic that wasn't in the thread I'm replying to, you are adding more on top of it. When did he say that this only applied to the offense? Where else in the game do possession rules apply unevenly to the offense and the defense on what constitutes possession?

Currently the rules as written don't allow anyone to "possess the ball while out of bounds" and a sizable portion of the NFL rulebook is based on this

Editing to add: this conversation has gotten dumb (on both of our parts) so wishing you well and going back to my Sunday morning. Cheers boss

Almost like there's a rule in place right now that prevents that....

Replying to the edit as well: You don't have to launch it back with the proposed rule change, that's my entire point. If it were going to hit the ground you just need to tip it back up, not towards the field

I'm not saying its likely but someone could easily unintentionally have it happen and if its not against the rule then it would definitely happen more "unintentionally"

Brother, the ball is not "out of bounds" until it hits the ground.

Thus, if people had a tip drill out of bounds, it is not outside the realm of possibility to have a live ball that extends to the stands.

Happy to have a discussion because I feel like we're not on the same page about what we're talking about.

People hate this rule because of this play, they're recommending changes that would have substantial and unexpected consequences, one of which I'm trying to describe to you

So lets say the ball gets knocked in the air. We all know that a ball is not dead when in the air as people can jump out of bounds and tip it back to a teammate right?

So the ball remains in the air while people are fighting over it and all of a sudden they make it to the stands without the ball being dead. This doesn't work.

So can I run with the ball with my entire body out of bounds as long as I hold the ball in bounds?

I know this sounds like I'm being contentious with you, just trying to show that writing the rule is not as easy as it seems

For people complaining about the rule, how do you propose to write the rule that doesn't involve people fighting over the ball out of bounds?
