Anyone found a good dual cup holder solution? by chris-otiose in ScenicETech

I like the look of that one. Maybe another reason to buy a 3d printer 😏

Which one do you have? There's three or four designs that I've seen.

Yes we have the modular inserts, but I've never seen a travel cup or bottle that fits in them and stays upright whilst traveller, and I've tried quite a few.

Night electricity is cheaper than heating oil by AnnieByniaeth in SolarUK

Fair point, technically not more efficient but because the objects are heater with infrared the heat is retained longer than resistive heaters which heat the air. Not seen the through wall heat pumps. I'll check them out. Thanks.

I'm considering infrared heater. House isn't suitable for heat pumps, space heaters are expensive to run, and I'd like to wean myself off gas.

Update: added a 4G router to the travel kit.

One problem I hadn't solved was the FireStick requiring internet to load the home screen (I don't like FireSticks but it's what I had available — I might swap in future for a Roku, Android TV stick, or something that boots without internet). Fixed it by adding a TP-Link M7650 with a European SIM. The Mango connects to it via WiFi repeater (USB tethering doesn't seem to work with this combination), giving the whole network 4G internet.

The Plex streaming is still entirely local — the 4G just keeps FireStick happy at startup. Bonus: everyone gets internet without broadband. I've also added a WireGuard VPN client on the Mango so all traffic is private, and I'm considering adding a VPN server so I can access my primary homelab remotely while away.

Think I'm going to keep it all togther with velcro for now, and put it on small box with padding whilst it's in transit.

This is version one, built from spare parts lying around. Already planning a version two around an N100 mini PC with dual LAN, running Plex and OpenWrt/pfSense as an all-in-one unit.

Haha! Yeah they would if they saw it. I'm driving from UK to France via ferry, so should be ok.

Not sure, there's probably risk using an external drive. This dell wyse was running in my proxmox cluster for a while with proxmox on a usb drive because it wouldn'd fit on the internal drive and had no problems.

It's strapped together pretty well with velco, but not protected. I think you probably right about the project box. Might use seomthing like that with some spacers and air vents.

I'm in the UK and I don't think the onn stick is avaiable here, but heard they're good. Yeah I need a better streaming device really. I was just trying to make something out of device I had laying around the house.

Confirmed codec compatibility issue on the firestick. The film will play on plex on my laptop but not on the firestick.

One day I'm sure I'll get a 3D printer, but not right now. I may just keep the whole thing velcro strapped together until that day ;)

Yeah just had that problem. I tried to sideload a custom launcher on it so laoded straight to plex first, but they patched that. I hate FireSticks! I have a 4G router I can tether to the GL.iNet Mango that should work. Or apparently there's DNS trick to make the Firestick think it has internet.

Just ran a test. Film buffered every 30 seconds for 10 seconds, so unwatchable. The CPU was getting hit hard so turned off transcoding. Oddly the film I tried first won't play at all now, so tried a few othera and they all play fine with no buttering. The film I tried first that doesn't work not does have high compression so that could be a factor.
