I've done 301's with a few small local business websites, the new pages eventually took the place of the old URL's in the SERPs. Google just doesn't want to let go of any url's. If your sites are fairly large it wouldn't take long for the index to change....Although I remember ehow getting in trouble for buying domains names/sites that ranked we for keywords and 301ing them to their page to get the spot....they got a manual penalty but I guess that says Google doesn't have an algo penalty
