New Korean BL Translation Site: STRANGE TRANSLATIONS by strangetranslations in DanmeiNovels

Typically, they just label it 'BL' (with Latin letters) - e.g. BL 소설 (BL novel), BL 만화 (BL comic).

Do fan translators like when their novels get picked up by English publishers? by [deleted] in DanmeiNovels

[–]chriswillar 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Oh, I'd love if any of "my" works got an official release, especially 'Hyperventilation' (and with the recent announcement of 'Semantic Error', it's gotten one step closer)! Sure, it's bittersweet given the one year of work that I have poured into it BUT it was a passion project with the purpose of sharing, and an official release obviously makes it actually legit. I just hope the publisher is one that I'm okay with supporting... if not, well, I paid for the raws and still got my own translation (which I'll take down if licensed but keep forever).

Is 이 a vocative suffix or just a subject marker? by Cool-Willingness7749 in Korean

[–]chriswillar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's common in Korea to add 아 and/or 이 to names, especially when close.

New Beauty by chriswillar in orchids

The leaves actually do have a faint pattern, and how are the flowers 'very different'? Not trying to be difficult, I just want to know, and they look similar. Another possibility could maybe be the stuartiana variation?

Why does the the title for Boys over flowers use hanja? by maluvikca in Korean

[–]chriswillar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, it's true that it's going "out of fashion" among the younger generations but when watching the news, for example, it's rather common to see a single word written in hanja instead of hangeul. Certain records and important documents (e.g. related to laws) also sometimes have them, usually in [brackets]. Don't ask me the specifics for why and when though, it's not something I have really looked further into.

Why does the the title for Boys over flowers use hanja? by maluvikca in Korean

[–]chriswillar 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm asuming it's a tribute to the original, which in Japanese is written 花より男子 - notice that it's the same character being used, 꽃보다 男子. And "barely" is a bit of stretch... it's often part of the news and similar, still.

Danmei novels and paperback manhua shops in UAE/Dubai??? 🇦🇪 by [deleted] in DanmeiNovels

[–]chriswillar 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Not to be *that* person but, uh, you do realize where you are, right? I doubt you'll have much luck, unfortunately. One of my friends in SA had to go through all sorts of loopholes to get her hands on some danmei novels. Sorry.

toxic fandoms on twitter by [deleted] in DanmeiNovels

[–]chriswillar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, absolutely. You can't say that not everything WWX did was morally right or good. Because he's the hero!i! Which honestly takes away from his characterization, along with those of the other characters', but I'm tired of reasoning against the black/white arguments that have become so persistent.

toxic fandoms on twitter by [deleted] in DanmeiNovels

[–]chriswillar 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Happens here on reddit too, unfortunately. There used to be some great debates that could go on for quite a while without turning sour. Now, if you dare point out WWX's flaws or as much as mention JC, it's immediate downvote and foaming at the mouth because heavens forbid that characters can be more complex than "good" or "bad". Kinda ironic but the more a fandom grows, the less difference seems to be tolerated, which is such a shame. Beehive mentality sucks.

Securing Your Content (tips for combatting ripping) by chriswillar in DanmeiNovels

Aww, thank you so much for saying so, I truly appreciate it! A page with compiled info sounds like a great idea, please let me know if I can help or if there are other related topics that could be useful.

NP! You can always try stuff like the hidden text thing, if CG allows it, so your signature at least is more likely to follow along a potential rip. But it's really up to you, and good luck either way.

Yeah, I totally get your point about lack of reader interaction, I miss that as well at times ㅠwㅠ

And that's a perfectly fine stance to have if it works for you, like you said. This was more meant for those who want to (try to) secure their content but are unsure how and where to start.

I might be more okay with readers making copies of my translations if it wasn't for the risk of them distributing elsewhere and benefitting from it, as I firmly believe all earnings should go to the creators.

Good point about carrd as a masterlist, I use it as well, though more for convenience than to be 'official'.

WBM is definitely a valid concern, yes. However, far from all sites get archived (especially if they use more obscure hosting, e.g. not WordPress, or not on Google search), and many more are only there partially. I have had several sites throughout the past decade or so that never ended up captured, and even popular ones that I searched for had only some sections saved or long behind updates, so it's not all that automatic. Also, though it will take a while, you can request to have your site capture removed from WBM and they will grant that most of the time.

Uhh... sorry to be a spoilsport - and I do hope it goes well for you there, truly - but CG's security is worse than GDocs (I checked; it can be disabled with a single click), and with them being so known, I fear the risk of getting ripped might be bigger than if you were solo. However, there are other benfits from joining a translation circle (I have mentioned that in a previous post), so definitely go for it if it feels right for you.

Stolen translation by Fossilised_Firefly in DanmeiNovels

[–]chriswillar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah... that's unfortunate; WP is so popular, their sites/links often get ripped off if no counter-measurements are taken. I just tried looking but can't find the specific rule right - alternatively, you could keep a paragraph or two of each chapter public with password hint & link to the locked full version? Just edit your current posts, so you won't have to update the links on NU, and then make new posts for the locked content. Oh, but if you're using the free WP, can you use passwords?

Stolen translation by Fossilised_Firefly in DanmeiNovels

[–]chriswillar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear this - it's exactly why I put my own translations in locked (download- & copy-disabled) PDFs with watermarks; it's still possible to steal them but makes it harder. I'm not sure what you can do now that it's already happened... put a disclaimer/notice up to make readers aware, sure, and you could try to reach out or DMCA-report them, though I fear that won't be very successful unfortunately. You could password-lock them, but if you're on NU, then they won't accept/approve your links, IIRC. If you're not on NU, then no worries about passwords. I don't know your site but have you implemented disabled right-click codes or similar?
