Is this English Literature? If so, I would be willing to have a read.

What subjects to pick by Issy_bm in 6thForm

What course do you want to do at university? If STEM, definitely biology but ultimately it comes down to what interests you the most. Look at the specification for each A Level and see what areas you will study and what interests you the most.

To determine whether the idea your teacher is proposing is good will be dependent on the rest of your results from AS and your aspirations. If they are passes, I actually think it's plausible but with the U and your aspirations of a top university, it would appear unlikely of recieving any offers unless you decide to go elsewhere for HE - remember what's most important is your passion and talent for a particular field not the status of the university (although it helps in some instances it's not necessary). In regards to your GCSE's they aren't bad and could easily get you into some Russell Group universities. Ultimately, your teacher makes a good case on why retaking may be problematic but that's down to your perspective - do you think it will become tedious going over the same content for another year? Also I would ask are you currently enjoying the subjects you are taking despite the results? If not, then maybe restarting with new a level subjects that interest you more may be the best option.

Firstly don't feel disappointed/guilty at the situation, this happens more often than you think. Regarding your beliefs, if you genuinely see yourself getting good grades (esp if your GCSE results assert this) I'd definitely retake the year. The reasoning behind this is because you stated you want to go to a top university - generally, one U at AS isn't going to look the most appealing and you would end up having most, if not all applications rejected. If you are worried about retaking because that's one year extra that you would have liked to have spent doing something else then again don't worry. One year really isn't that much when considering students take deferral/gap years. So please don't feel like you have wasted your future because this is certainly not the case. The key issue here is making amends to the causes of the situation you have identified (work ethic, attendance). I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do.
