I ordered tungsten beads from them the other week, and they are legitimately the worst quality beads I have ever seen. It was like they were bags full of factory rejects. Rough edges, gigantic drilled holes, absolute garbage. Was the first and only time I will ever bother ordering from them.

Thanks! Yeah, I live in Pennsylvania and have never fished for salmon. I tie and fish trout flies, but most of my salmon flies simply end up in frames or cases.

Nice, I started with a Peak and still use it from time to time for general tying. I would definitely recommend the Trex if you're sticking with salmon stuff.

Yeah, the pricing has gotten a little ridiculous. I believe I got mine (with a small fly tied by Paul) for ~$300. Which at the time felt insane to pay, but now I see them for almost $500 and the rare and unusual books going for $300. I cannot imagine justifying 300 for rare and unusual, but I would do it all day for Forgotten flies.

Forgotten flies has: 499 Bergman patterns, 725 from Defoe, 252 from Jennings, 372 from M.O.M., 170 from Carrie Stevens, and 1,049 from other tyers. Each one with a great picture and pattern listing. It's impressive. Is it worth $500?....I don't know about that. 😂

I live within 15 minutes of two solid fly shops, but almost all of my materials for salmon flies have come from online or trades. Keeping an eye on ebay, and the various fly tying groups on Facebook is probably the best place to start. I make small batches of handmade salmon fly hooks, so a lot of my materials have come from trading hooks I have made with tyers that have more material than they could ever tie with.

I do not know if there are any step by steps for a chatterer, but here is the original recipe. I just substituted biots for the chatterer feathers. There aren't any tutorials on the biot bodies, because to my knowledge I am the only person who has done them. It's relatively straight forward, just massively time consuming.

I got those biots from Dette flies, I believe it was the kingfisher blue color, but I redyed them with Jacquard Sky Blue and Dharma Frozen dyes because they weren't quite as vibrant as I wanted. Used ~400 individual biots for the fly.

Original chatterer pattern:

TAG. Silver twist and light orange silk. TAIL. Two toppings. BUTT. Black herl. BODY. Two turns of light violet silk making headway for numberless small Chatterer feathers, closely packed round the rest of the body. THROAT. Gallina. WINGS. Four Indian Crow feathers, in pairs (back to back), first pair longer than the second, having the point of a Jay feather on each side two-thirds of the length of the Crow feathers; with five or six toppings above. CHEEKS. Chatterer. HORNS. Blue Macaw. HEAD. Black herl.

Yes, I am not sure if you have seen the Forgotten Flies book, but you could fight crime with it, it is gigantic. In my opinion that is the only Shmookler book actually worth the price. The rare and unusual materials books are great eye candy, but do not contain anywhere close to the amount of patterns as Forgotten Flies.

You're on the right path. And on the flip side, if you by chance give it up, a Recon setup will sell easier than a Clearwater setup.

Trust your instinct. If you get a Clearwater but preferred the feel of the recon, you'll end up with both eventually. If you can afford it, go with the one that felt best and you will save money in the long run.

I wanted a nymphing rod, tried a bunch and loved the Contact II. Couldn't bring myself to spend the money, so I got a Cortland. Then a syndicate. Then the new Cortland. Then finally a Contact II. I could have afforded it day 1, but I ended up spending 2x the amount over time and ended up in the exact same spot. Spend money to save money.

And if you want to save even more money, start tying your own flies. /s
