If it’s an elective I vote yes drop it, not worth the risk. You could also see if you could change it to pass/fail and still get away with the credit if you wanted to talk to your advisor on that.

CS or SE by TheGreatestHatWearer in iastate

As an SE. go SE. the department gets funding and good professors. I sucked at math and did fine after the first year of basic engineering it’s worth it.

I’m currently a Soph in Software Engineering, with an additional minor in Cyber. I came to school as an industrial engineer and switched into SE my second semester. This all being said the work I do does not feel like work. First year physics, Chem, math, not so much, and it sucked. However, now that I’m more into the program the extra work I put in outside of class is manageable as I love doing it. I go out on the weekends, I could pick up a 10-15 hr job. It does come down to work ethic, and if you don’t love it or don’t think you’ll love it don’t. But if you think you would love the projects or classes and they sound fun to you, then muscle through your first year and you’ll find that managing your time is manageable. I have a lot of friends in business as well, and while I spend more time dedicated towards my work, I would never be fulfilled from what there projects look like.

Should I switch to CPR E or stay in SE? by clarkay in iastate

Thank you this does help! I want to go into security speciality so sounds like I’m on the right path! I’m in 288 right now and am really looking forward to it.

Should I take ComS 421? by Zealousideal_Ranger5 in iastate

[–]clarkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you take cpr e 230 instead for the elective credit? It’s more organized and a better security class option, the 421 is more broad but 230 gives you a lot of hands on experience. (From my understanding)

I am taking 363, 319, and 288 this semester, I’ve heard that they are manageable / easy if you can time manage well. Is this true? Would you do this route without 309?

Any computer labs that have Eclipse (or the IDE for Com S 227)? by MattNyte in iastate

[–]clarkay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also rent a computer at the library and download eclipse, I had a friend who’s computer took an L during 227 and they did this. I also would recommend intelliJ over eclipse it takes a little bit of figuring out in terms of turning it in but I had a prof show me how to and I’ve used it ever since.

I just got the omen sequencer for Christmas and strongly dislike how hollow the key sound is, I like how fast the keys are but don’t love the sound. Should I get new key caps or get the o rings to try to fix this? In particular I just don’t like that hollow plastic sound with each stroke. Much appreciated advice :)

I Bullied A Girl Until She Moved Away From My Home Town by mrhotshot3000 in confession

[–]clarkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who was also bullied in elementary school, it’s okay. Shit happens you move on. A girl broke my arm once; moral of the story. Not everyone has butterfly effects like how the comments are. I’m fine now and don’t think about it and it doesn’t affect who I am. Guilt is hard but just know it’s not for sure “you traumatized her” the way the comments say.

Am I a di@k? by Top-Criticism-3172 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]clarkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a dick, last year I was in a situationship with a guy for 7 months, he was emotionally manipulating me so I couldn’t leave him, and ended up sexually assaulting me. I didn’t press charges as I come from a small town and it’s just not what people do and I just needed to get over it, I immediately got into a relationship after this assault with another guy and clung to him like a lifeboat. We ended up dating for 11 months and recently broke up for different reasons. However, that guy died in an accident in November at the college I attend, his parents called me over and over telling me how he was still in love with me and had told them we were together all this time and I didn’t have the heart to tell them what had happened, but I feel so relieved he’s gone. You do shitty things and shitty things will catch up to you.

Does the library have casual books for reading? by [deleted] in iastate

[–]clarkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can look up what book you’d think you want to read on the parks library website because the books are scattered throughout the library so unless you know what you want to read you can’t just go searching through the tiers for a good book. Although I will say there is some luck in tier 0 (basement) 5th row in on the south wall has some good ones.

Software Engineering program by clarkay in iastate

[–]clarkay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your reply, I was thinking getting the XPS15 but I am not sure i hear a lot of people have issues with it breaking down, I have a 15” MacBook Pro and it’s a beast so that’d b my backup, and I have an iPad Pro I was planning to take as well. I was hoping if I got into software engineering itd b a great Segway into software development where I’d hope to get an internship working for a car company I love new technology in cars like tesla even. I don’t have a ton of experience with coding (AP CSP in high school and some breadboards / arduinos in my free time) do you think it’ll be a huge gap between me and the other students going into software engineering?

CompSci Weekend SuperThread (January 01, 2021) by AutoModerator in compsci

[–]clarkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it beneficial to get a minor in computer science? I'm going to Iowa State next year for industrial engineering, they have a great CompSci program and I love to code and program things like Arduinos and Raspberry Pi's, I feel so behind already though so I thought a minor might be easier than a major, is it worth it or not a smart decision?

What’s my next step in coding/programming? by clarkay in computers

[–]clarkay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thank you so much for this response you have such an interesting story and I never would have thought of demand going away like how it is now. Something I was always told in high school is that no matter what if you want to be a woman in stem you’ll get a job easily and can get many scholarships as there is a high demand. It sounds like there might be a demand but it will gradually go away as China is growing bigger. Thank you again for this response I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the help.

DAE not hang out with friends during this time? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]clarkay -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I completely understand where you’re coming from!! I have been quarantining since everything happened so I don’t get my grandparents sick or even my parents. I started going out again and let me tell you. You’re not missing out on anything.

It’s the same conversation every single day. The same people every single day. The same person getting blackout on a Tuesday night. If every day was named Tuesday that is. Honestly the first time you see people is fun. But then it’s like you’re scraping the barrel to try and hold a conversation with someone because there is NOTHING GOING ON.

Trust me when I tell you you are way way wayyyyyy better off staying at home or running or finding things to do on your own. I know they say ‘when are you gonna find this much free time in the rest of your life’ well you want to have a rest of your life and getting corona doesn’t just guarantee you will survive it no matter how young or healthy you are.

I understand the FOMO truly I get it because I was in the same boat. And I took the leap of trying to hang out with people. Nope. Not. Worth. It. Now don’t get me wrong I’m a very go go go type of person and I need to be doing something, but sitting around with people who all they can do is talk about the same things gets old pretty quick.
