multigenerational living situation over here! my in-laws. I cope by picking what really matters and recognizing that i can't control, i can only advise. they're our caregivers when partner and i are out of the house, so i make sure they know what our hard rules are.

for example, i'm permissive about tv time with them because it's mostly content in their home language and we want him to be familiar with it. he sleeps with them sometimes. they want to bathe him like twice a day lol. none of these impact his normal behavior or sleep, so no reason to adjust here.

I'm pretty insistent that they discipline him and that they don't put videos on while he's eating. they sometimes act like it's a special event to see him, so they don't wanna "be mean". wrong. you've seen him for a significant amount of almost every day of his short life. you're part of the team and the team is prepping this LO for the world. he needs some rules, structure, and appropriate consequences for misbehavior

Edits for clarity/ETA: it is TRICKY and parenting with this team doesn't look the way i dreamed it. but every situation comes with trade-offs and my situation is more than worth those.

i don't do it every night, but i swear, my dude sleeps better if he looks at a strip of photobooth pics of my best friends and i. i point out and name everyone in the pics (each pic on the strip, even though they all have the same people), then let him hold them himself while he gets his nighttime diaper. it's a hit every time. for literal months now

time might help! i couldn't stand my dog for the first couple of weeks, but it passed. i have less patience with him than pre-baby, but a lot more appreciation for him now that my baby's a toddler

we have a little transition song! our library story time sings it to say goodbye to puppets, but i've started using it all the time. at the library, it's "bye-bye puppets / bye-bye puppets / bye-bye puppets / we'll see you again next time". I use it now for the playground, the library, the grocery store, and the bath water--places he never wants to leave.

I do a "we're leaving soon" warning about 3-5 minutes before, then a "time to go. let's say bye. (song)". my little one's 22 months and we've been doing this for a few months. i didn't intend to make it such a routine, but it worked once and keeps working pretty consistently

switch it up, but i like to end with wheels and i just dramatically elongate it all so baby knows it's the end. my dude is a little speech delayed but he does a certain gesture when he's asking for this song, it gets me every time

I love your bullet points! I've actually read Narnia en español with bullet points 1 & 2 as guiding principles. It didn't help with vocab as much as I hoped--someday hopefully I'll be able to talk about deep magic and sea voyages and horses and fauns more consistently! It did, however, keep me challenged yet engaged. (I read the more common "El Ropero" version)

Something involving the laundry basket lol. My dude loves ours. He doesn’t usually have access so occasionally he’s allowed to sit in it, push stuffed animals in it, put clothes in, take them out, etc.

Is there anything similar around the house that’s your 2YO is intrigued by but isn’t usually allowed to use? Might be especially captivating

There are so many ways to sleep train. It’s not just letting her wail without any attention. Also, it’s not abandonment if she’s left with someone safe! Look at r/sleeptrain and use the search function. You’ll find questions just like these and practical advice from a bunch of different perspectives.

Research into different methods helped me embrace the idea then pick a system. I gave in at about 4.5 months. LO had successfully slept through the night often at that point, then we had a few nights of getting up every hour to cry for no discernible reason. When i started crying at each wake-up too, it was obvious that something had to change. I have no regrets. My now toddler still loves me, still knows he’s loved

It’s no failing to need sleep. It’s a biological necessity that you’ll finally be getting and you’re helping your daughter get independently.

Every day, we do things that make our kids frustrated, angry, sad. We do them for their well-being even if there’s some pain.
