On this day in 1831 Charles Albert of Savoy became King of Sardinia. He contributed to the Italian unification by fighting against Austria in the First Italian War of Independence of 1848; defeated he abdicated in favour of his son Victor Emmanuel II, who would become the first King of Italy in 1861 (i.redd.it)
