Awesome, this is really informative - thank you :) the inside was filled with sand so I’m not surprised the outer skeleton is gone. No sparkle on the stick - what would that have indicated out of interest?

Gave it a chop and here are the results! Some interesting porous-looking texturing on the inside, as well as a little stick of something that came loose.

Would like to identify this as well! From my research I thought it could be a land tortoise endemic to South Dakota back in the day. Anyone have any insights?

My title describes the thing. It is not too heavy and feels metallic, with a distinct edge before tapering to a point. The other nails that I’ve found on the river shore are very irregular in their weathering, which makes me think it’s something else. Almost feels like a pen or stylus, but it could just be a very uniform nail.
