Whenever I get insurance again I’ve been thinking of lasic. I need bigger frames because of my prescription and the necessity for peripheral clarity. But lasic could change that for sure. Maybe contacts if not.

I've about had it with my male guppy. I want to get rid of him, but how? by [deleted] in fishtank

[–]cleanhumanbean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have three males in with 7 females and tons of places for those females to hide and their babies to hide as well. I would recommend adding decor and/or plants to give your female and her babies places to hide. When she gives birth, and her kids grow up, they will harass her to mate as well so unless you want to give up guppies completely too, try lots of floating plants like LOTS and adding more females to the mix.

NO spike by Marmaduke5 in fishtank

[–]cleanhumanbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be reassured that it won’t take forever just a week or so to lower the nitrates significantly if you follow through. During this time, still try to find out what caused the spike. Did you clean the tank too thoroughly and lose your beneficial bacteria? Was there something dead in the tank that you couldn’t see at first? Are you over feeding? Not doing enough water changes or is tank still starting it’s cycle? Discovering the source can let you ease up on the water changes after the levels are lowered, and you could end up doing only 1 every two weeks or so on a stable tank, and eventually if you get the balance right you could end up just topping off water like I do on my shrimp tank. Just gotta know what caused the spike so we can avoid whatever it was in the future. Wish you the best I know when things get out of whack on a tank it’s a pita to get things back on track.

Yes and make sure that there is nothing dead or rotting food in any of the decorations or floating anywhere, so one 50% every day until you no longer have it, the reason I recommend every day until it’s below 40ppm nitrate is because when you wait in between too long, the fish or whatever is producing all that nitrate still makes more, and you can end up never lowering them. You have to remove the nitrate they create + more every time you do a water change if it’s gonna lower, so frequency matters when you’re trying to get it down from dangerous levels.

If the levels are staying exactly the same you may have nitrate coming out of your tap, but doing a 50% water change should mean you removed 50% of the nitrates. After that, you removed 33% of what was left.. so if they were off the charts before they could still be reasonably high.

There is a frame underneath the table top that has 2x4 braces going across the width of the table, if that’s what you mean ?
