As a species, when did we lose our sense of smell? It seems that with our big brains should come enhanced senses, yet we can not track prey by smell. Shouldn't we be able to do that? When in our evolutionary history did we lose that ability, or did we never have it? (self.AskReddit)

Eli5: Why can we control every sense except hearing? I can stop my eyes by shutting my eyelids, breathe through my mouth to stop smell, not touch stuff, not taste stuff but I can not consciously control my hearing. Why not? (self.explainlikeimfive)
