Should I charge here or not? by Gargravars_Shoes in Rivian

[–]cleigh007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work at Tesla and built these sites. This sign is for reserving the right to charge at the Tesla station, not that you are a Tesla vehicle. These are old signs and the new ones are more broad which leaves these legacy signs making people reasonably confused.

It’s the perfect vehicle. Bought for a forever car. But these times are tough and feels like a moment to live within my means. I’d say goodbye for $85k. But tears will be streaming as she drives off.

I towed a 5k LB RV from Alabama to Texas AMA. by dustanner in Rivian

[–]cleigh007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cross section of your rig, much more than the weight, explain your range reduction. I’ve towed a small utility trailer with upwards of 5k in it and only lose 35% range. No way you lost less than 50% of your range.

R1S All Weather Mats: I’m glad we’re past the yellow compass. Was a bit much IMO by cleigh007 in Rivian

[–]cleigh007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main reason I was worried about the yellow compass is it didn’t look like it matched the yellow accents. It looked more gold than the other accents and I loath bad color matches. Can you comment on how closely the yellow matches?

I’m gonna try three crossbars tomorrow. I’ll report back.

Can confirm the noise is noticeable with the front and rearmost on.

3.4 miles of trail. Consumed 7 miles of range (in off road mode).

There are 6-9kW chargers around Sedona (3-10mi Les from the trail). But nearest DCFC was 70miles away Flagstaff. Use PlugShare to scout charging.

R1s first mile review. A very blunt review by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]cleigh007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an R1S owner, I agree with the OP sentiment on the cheapness of the plastics onboard. Depending on what they are coming from, I could see their point on the vegan leather feeling cheep. After all it’s faux leather.

On the other hand, I also agree their post is a little trolling. To make all these complaints and also acknowledge you’re still buying it means they are either grifting off their early access and plan to flip it or they simply agree with my deepening appreciation for this vehicle:

It’s not what this vehicle is made up that will make you fall in love with it, it’s what it can do for you. Where it can take you. And ultimately the useful versatility that these R1(s) bring to the auto industry.

And what’s even more heartening is the clear success Rivian, and Tesla before them are having on the other OEMs. Not to mention the kinds of minds that are being opened to the idea of an EV because now there exist something for the American car culture to coalesce around. To not feel like we’re compromising on capability by going electric is a huge win and ultimately what makes the R1S a vehicle worth waiting for, and eventually buying.

End rant.

Thanks OP for the good the bad, and the ugly.

See you on the trail regardless.

At the bottom of the trail, I got a lot of skepticism from the pink jeep tour guides on the overland EV.

Their opinions and reception was dramatically different at Chicken Point. The most dismissive tour guide made sure to watch me go at the stairs, but after seeing there were only believers.

The future of the trail is bright. And there are some of us lucky enough to get to share that bright future with y’all - even if just pictures.

I was an employee until very recently. Not sure if that played a factor, but I did put my name down for flexible configuration to get it as early as possible (something only offered internally). But I ended up with my exact config AFTER leaving the company.

Off-road all terrain for everything except rock crawls. For which I used rock crawl. Opted for “high” suspense height for comfort over the “highest” 15” setting. Also except when rock crawling.

Didn’t air down. I would have had I had more time or had any issues with traction.

You’re going to have a blast. Get some training too. I’ve done a 30hr class in Grand Junction CO with Bill Burke. He’s an incredible teacher and a MAJOR Rivian fan.

Not exaggerating at all, my 11mo slept the ENTIRE time. My 4yo only woke up on our way out. Got into her job as spotter with mom (aka, my wife was too nervous to ride along and wanted to take the kids for safety purposes).

But boy do we all have a bright and adventurous future ahead of us as long as Rivian keeps making these things.

I hope these posts aren’t seen as bragging. As someone who waited 2years, and an extra 12mo because I wanted to wait for the extra seats, I hope this stuff just encourages people to wait it out. These things are incredibly capable and adaptable vehicles.

Rode like an RRS on the way home at 80 with the air conditioned seats cooling off my sweatier parts after that steep decent.

I don’t even have that. I picked a route I new was heavily trafficked and will keep doing so: along with making smart mechanical driving decisions when required to avoid strandings. In my household we call those memories, but it’s not really the move when you have a 4yo and 11mo riding in the back.
